What is Nutritional Yeast For? Is It Good For You?

What do you think of when someone mentions yeast. If you’re like most people, you picture dough rising in your mind. Baking bread or some other scrumptious baked goods. But there is another type of yeast increasing in popularity… especially among VEGANS or PLANT-BASED EATERS. It’s known as NUTRITIONAL YEAST or nooch! You may be wondering what is nutritional yeast for?

About Nutritional Yeast

Nutritional yeast is similar to the yeast used in baking, but it undergoes a heating and drying process. This procedure inactivates the yeast. You would need to use active yeast for baking. Nutritional yeast hails from a species of yeast called Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This is the yeast that provides so many gifts to mankind: wine, beer, and bread.

But Don’t confuse nutritional yeast with brewer’s yeast. They are completely different. There is a special process used to create each type of yeast. You can grow nutritional yeast from a number of sources. Sugar cane, molasses, and sugar beets are commonly used in the process. Brewer’s yeast is usually grown on barley.

Brewer’s yeast is a by-product of beer making. It is also used to make bread. It has a bitter taste. Nutritional yeast offers a cheesy nutty flavor for your pallet. Nutritional yeast is also better for you. It has a much high nutritional value (hence its name). It is an excellent source of B- complex vitamins.

Most people associate yeast with baking bread.

Vegan… Just What The Doctor Ordered!

Nutritional yeast is all the rage in the vegan and plant-based eating communities. The main reason… It is high in vitamin B12. This is an important B vitamin that people usually receive from animal sources. The truth of the matter, B12 is produced by soil microbes... and the soil must contain the mineral cobalt!

The animals eat grass or other plants growing in cobalt-rich soil… hopefully… so they can pass this critical vitamin on to you… if you eat meat. Animals don’t produce vitamin B12, so it relies completely relies on the mineral cobalt. Since the soils are being depleted, and vegetables have all the remnants of soil removed before it hits the shelves, EVERYONE (not just Vegans) should consider finding a healthy source of the vitamin- B12.

I’m Batty for Vitamin B 12!

What happens when you don’t have enough vitamin B12? Anemia for starters. This is when the body doesn’t produce enough red blood cells. You will begin to feel sluggish and tired. You’ll have trouble getting off the couch. You won’t be able to think fast on your feet and you’ll start forgetting where your keys are… or where the remote is if you’re still on the couch!

Nerve damage is also a possibility. This is a long term effect of a vitamin B12 deficiency. A common sign, when this is happening, is when paresthesia sets in. This is a sensation that feels likes pins and needles are being stuck into your skin.

Depression and dementia are possibilities when you’re low on B12. Optic neuropathy is also possible. Again, this is a result of nerve damage. This could impair your vision. Vitamin B12 plays a huge role in maintaining health. Blue-green Algae from Klamath Lake is also an excellent source of vitamin B12.

Don’t be nervous… just a picture of your neural network!

Empowered By Nutrients!

By now, you know about vitamin B12… the superstar in the yeast world. But, what other nutrients find a home in yeast? Well, that sort of depends. It is a common practice among manufacturers to fortify their yeast. This means some nutrients are manufactured or man-made.

As yeast cells grow, they naturally produce vitamins and minerals. You can find your vitamin B-complex vitamins in yeast. One tablespoon of yeast contains 30 to 180% of your recommended daily’s for B vitamins. (B1 ,B2 ,B3, B5, B6, and B12)

You can’t have vitamins without their significant other… MINERALS. It contains iron, selenium, and zinc. Lately, a lot of attention has been given to zinc to fight COVID. Zinc is extremely important for your immune system. Selenium has antioxidant properties and beneficial for cellular health. Iron is important for red blood cell production.

Beta-glucans take refuge in nutritional yeast. Beta-glucans are a form of soluble found on the cell walls of plants, bacteria, fungi, yeast, lichens, and algae. These fibrous wonders love your heart to health and help lower cholesterol.

Now nearly everyone is concerned about protein... maybe a little too much. Believe it or not… you can find plenty of it in the plant kingdom. One tablespoon of yeast provides your body with 2 grams of protein. You will also find all nine of the essential amino acids… amino acids are required for the synthesis of protein for your body.

The Problem With Fortified Vitamins and Minerals!

Anytime you consume synthetic foods you are veering away from whole-foods. Your body processes vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients from food way, way better than when it’s in a whole food form. Think about it. Your body has evolved over thousands upon thousands of years to get to the present moment.

In only a small sliver of time, mankind in all of its “brilliance” has decided to create its own food by altering what nature has provided for our use. Processed foods have created a worldwide health epidemic. Fortified yeast is still food. Manufacturers have just tossed in some synthetic vitamins and minerals which is entirely unnecessary.

This is a marketing ploy commonly used to boost sales. This has become commonplace in commodities like water. People just don’t know how their bodies process food. Doctors are not normally well-informed in nutrition. It is all about prescription meds in modern medicine.

Don’t get me wrong. I love marketing, but I also love ethics. There is a lot of misinformation going on in the world today because of greed. It’s possible to have a free market society based on honesty and integrity, but we will have to evolve more as a species.

So, man-manufactured vitamins are not only uncalled for, they may be toxic and harmful to your body. Non-fortified yeast supplies your body with a fair amount of nutrients in which your body knows what to do with.

What Else Can Yeast Help You With?

Immune System – Yeast acts as a probiotic to help fight off bad gut bacteria. Yeast helps keep your digestive system balanced and healthy. This enables your immune system to do its work.

Natural components that make up nutritional yeast also help build up your immune system… just revisit the discussion on nutrients above.

Digestion – Are you familiar with the term probiotic. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that exists in certain foods like yogurt and yeast. Don’t let bacteria freak you out. There are good and bad bacteria The good helps clear out the bad. They perform like Jedi knights defeating the dark side. This will also aid in nutrient absorption.

Saccharomyces boulardii (yikes) is a yeast that behaves like a probiotic. It helps govern your intestinal tract and guard against incoming pathogens. It helps keep your immune system and your intestinal barriers going strong. Doctors have recognized that intestinal barrier defects are behind many gastrointestinal diseases.

More Energy – The vitamin B12 content in nutritional yeast may help you avoid fatigue. B12 helps in red blood cell production. Red blood cells supply your body with oxygen. Oxygen helps break down sugars. This process will create the energy you need to get things done.

The B-complex vitamins also help convert food into energy which in turn helps charge your metabolism.

Antiviral and Antibacterial – Nutritional yeast is the 4th most prescribed herbal in Germany, according to Dr. Seymour Pomper, for its antibacterial properties. It has been shown to be one of the best solutions to combat chronic candida. It has also been useful in taking on E.coli, salmonella, and staphylococcus.

After Workout Recovery – Nutritional yeast may help restore white blood cells that are lost during workouts. Cell restoration stimulates muscle recovery. It may also help reduce inflammation. Zinc is also present in nutritional yeast which is a good mineral for muscle regeneration.

Is Yeast An Animal?

Yeast is actually a fungus. It is a single-cell organism. To qualify for animal status, one must have multiple cells. Yeast are not able to move which an animal characteristic. Yeast also can’t reproduce.

1… 2… 3… Side Effects!

Let’s face it. Some people are just allergic to certain foods, while everyone else gobbles down with impunity!f Nutritional yeast is no exception. It’s considered safe by most people, but it could cause problems for someone that is sensitive to yeast products or it may interact with certain medications.

If you suffer from Chron’s disease or if you have any irritable bowel problems, steer clear of nutritional yeast. The yeast may worsen these types of conditions.

People who experience agonizing migraines should be careful with yeast products. It contains an amino acid called tyramine which may trigger headaches.

Overdoing yeast could trigger some digestive discomfort. Go easy on it until you can determine how your body responds.

A certain class of anti-depressants called monoamine oxidase inhibitors may cause a negative reaction with yeast. Antifungal drugs and some narcotics may interact with yeast. Diabetics should also be careful with yeast since certain medications. These could also lead to a bad reaction.

How To Use, Yes Please!

You can find nutritional yeast in flakes or powdered form. It has a nutty or cheese-like flavor. The easiest way is to sprinkle it on food like a seasoning. Try some on potatoes, popcorn, vegetables, and salads.

How To Store Nutritional Yeast

Choose a cool, dark location for storage. You can also place your yeast in the fridge. Counter-top ceramic jars will also work. Nutritional yeast has a two-year shelf life.

Final Thoughts

I like to use nutritional yeast on popcorn and potatoes. I also make homemade garden burgers in a food processor every week. I usually add about half a cup of yeast to the mix. Home-made garden burgers are delicious and nutritious by the way.

I have sworn off meat and dairy for health considerations. My health has drastically improved after being in dire straights. I feel wonderful and am astounded by how I can concentrate on writing or reading into the late hours of the night. My brain used to get super foggy and I was sleepy all the time. I would never go back to eating as I did before.

Changing how I eat has led me to many new ways of meal preparation. Yeast is another wonderful idea to get some serious healthy nutrients into my body. I have yet to find a real cheese substitute (a major addiction for me before). Some people swear by the “cheese” recipes that use nutritional yeast and cashews. It hasn’t really worked for me that way. I will continue to sprinkle it on some food as a spice alternative.

Anyway, if you are looking for a healthy way to add B12, try some nutritional yeast.

Thanks for reading, many blessings… Brian

I am in no way diagnosing any cures for any diseases and conditions. Nutritional yeast is a natural food source and like many food sources offer nutrition when consumed. It is a medical fact that certain vitamins and minerals aid in certain functions of the body. My intent here is to report after investigating numerous sources of data and always look for medical research and studies to back it up.

What is Turmeric For? And Where can you Buy it?

Turmeric root has been revered for thousands of years in India. Maybe you have seen it on a spice jar at home and wondered what turmeric is for? It is mostly known in Western society as a spice. Many years ago, I falsely assumed that curry was a spice used in traditional Indian food or in Chinese dishes. Curry is actually made from many kinds of spices. Turmeric is often featured in some of these curry dishes. Bright yellow curry dishes have a turmeric base.

Buddhist monk’s robes are often gold-colored because they are dyed with turmeric. Turmeric has been used as a fabric dye for hundreds of years. It’s a great and safe dye for beginners. Turmeric is often added to food because of the way it adds color to the dish.

The best thing about turmeric is how it benefits your overall health and well-being. Turmeric has been a long time favorite in Indian Ayurvedic medicine. I’m talking about thousands of years. India is a land rich in history and wisdom.

But wait… I’m Only Here for the Turmeric Benefits!

Turmeric is great for the kitchen, but it is simply amazing when it comes to your health. This has been the go-to spice for any health remedy in Indian households for many generations. It is known to have an astounding list of health properties… antioxidant… antiviral… antibacterial… anti-fungal… anti-carcinogenic… and, anti-inflammatory!

But what does this mean in layman’s terms? What does it actually do for your health?

  • Arthritis – The medical profession is beginning to catch on to turmeric’s effectiveness in combating inflammation. It is an excellent anti-inflammatory. Curcumin is the active component within turmeric that is responsible for its healing properties. Curcumin requires help for absorption into the human body. Turmeric, on its own merit, has been designed by nature to do what it does best.
  • Antioxidant – How important are antioxidants these days! Getting caught with your pants down with nasty viruses running amok is not a good IDEA. Personally, I’m all on board with anything that amps up my immune system. Turmeric has properties that help go to war with FREE RADICAL SCAVENGERS.
  • Heart disease – The compounds in turmeric are great for maintaining a healthy heart. It can help keep your arteries from clogging up.
  • Digestive aid – It is useful for gut inflammation and treating irritable bowel syndrome. It also offers gallbladder and kidney support.
  • Depression – Would you believe it? Curcumin (the main component in turmeric) ran head-to-head with prosaic in a research study And, without those nasty BIG PHARMA side-effects! Turmeric may help boost brain neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.
  • Alzheimer’s Disease – There is no cure for this insidious disease. BUT, prevention is possible. Turmeric’s antioxidant capabilities are excellent for stalling the onset of Alzheimer’s. Oxidation of brain cells and inflammation play a big role in cognitive decline.
  • Diabetes – Turmeric works well with diabetic medication and may bolster its performance. Its antioxidant capabilities may help with insulin sensitivity.

Where Can You Buy It?

You could always go to your local health food store. But, if you have ever shopped in one of these stores, you know how pricey they can be. Wouldn’t you rather have it delivered to your doorstep? It is much more convenient that way… and less exposure to our current situation in 2020 and 2021.

If it’s past that date by the time you read this... WE MADE IT THROUGH THE PANDEMIC. However, This is not the time to lower the protection of your immune system.

Listed below are some companies that I researched that sell quality TURMERIC or CURCUMIN. Feel free to browse down and see what they have to offer. I have included many aspects of how they bring turmeric to the market and their company philosophies. There is also a focus on environmental considerations with some of the choices... if this is something that sways how you do business.

HAPPY SHOPPING!!!

P.S. I do have affiliate links with the following companies. Most of the companies online sell through an affiliate. It does not increase the price of the products. Everything you buy on Amazon is also done through an affiliate. Thank you for your time.

Sometimes life has defining moments. An event happens to steer you in a new direction. Mitchell May, the founder of Pure Synergy, nearly died in a horrific car crash. This event sent him seeking answers. To find ways to heal. His journey led him into the world of whole foods, botanicals, and your body’s own natural healing force.

Why Pure Synergy’s Turmeric?

PURE SYNERGY states that they’ve been able to release turmeric’s fullest potential for healing with their certified organic triple extract. This wonderful extract intensifies its purity, potency, bioavailability, and effectiveness. Turmeric is well respected within the medical and homeopathic community for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Turmeric promotes healthy brain functioning. It is fabulous for digestive health as well as your heart’s health. Its anti-inflammatory effects on your body are a perfect fit for improving the health of your joints and bones.

This turmeric extract is full of curcumin (turmeric’s it factor compound). Their turmeric product contains verified levels of essential turmeric oils with super bioavailability.

Pure Synergy’s turmeric is triple extracted with CO2, H2O, and organic ethanol to maximize its curcuminoids, essential oils, and polysaccharides. Each capsule contains the equivalent of 100,000 mg or freshly harvested turmeric rhizomes. Their SuperPure®, eco-friendly extraction method separates them from the rest of the pack. They have absolutely zero tolerance for any chemical solvents or additives.

They only use ORGANIC, non-GMO, Gluten-free, Vegan, and Kosher ingredients in their formula.

What you Should Know Before Buying Turmeric Supplements!

ASORBABILITY. You may be aware that curcumin is difficult to absorb on its own.  Supplement companies have searched far and wide to resolve this issue. Black pepper is commonly added to aid in assimilation.

Pure Synergy uses the entire root of the turmeric plant during their whole spectrum process. Turmeric root not only contains the curcuminoid portion (curcumin) but also contains polysaccharides and turmerone oils.

Polysaccharides are carbohydrates. Turmerones are naturally occurring healthy fatty plant-compounds. These compounds help your body absorb the curcumin into your body easier. Curcumin supplements need help. Black pepper is often used for better bioavailability. Turmeric already contains the necessary components in-house to get the job done. Nature already has this figured out. Using whole foods as nature intended is always choice

So, the bottom line is, when you get curcumin straight from the source… TURMERIC, which has naturally occurring turmerones oils, you end up with a top-notch form of turmeric extract minus all the unhealthy additives and fillers.

How is the Turmeric Tested? Turmeric grows underground… like a root. BUT, it is actually a rhizome. It is basically part of an underground stem with roots shooting underneath.

Being underground, turmeric is exposed to whatever happens to be in the surrounding soil. Farming soils may become polluted with heavy metals and other contaminants. This has become a common issue with turmeric farms.

Check and see if the turmeric supplement you are prepared to buy is fully vetted and tested for heavy metals, pesticides, and other poisonous substances. You should always ASK. Going organic is always a good idea for maintaining optimal health. The purer, the better!

Why extraction is better! Indian style curry is delicious. Indian curry is made with many spices, including turmeric. But, are you getting the full benefits of turmeric from these traditional Indian dishes? Probably nowhere close to what you can expect from a turmeric extract.

Truth be told, concentrated turmeric extract will be loaded with many more healthy components. However, extracts should be made with non-toxic methods. Pure Synergy uses a holistic process involving organic ethanol, purified water, and CO2 to extract the compounds and retain their potency. All the capsules should contain all the wonderful phytochemicals you would expect from a quality turmeric extract. Pure Synergy calls it the SuperPure® process.

The Whole is Always Better than Its Equal Parts. Recent research has put into question curcumin only supplements. Are they really that beneficial towards your health? When you shortcut nature, one often falls short.

The overall synergy of the plant is missing when you snatch one component out of it for supplementation. Nature has created a perfect storm of healthy components in many whole foods. You can blow your money buying chelated vitamins and minerals that don’t absorb into your system easily. Supplement companies may use a chemical process with vitamins and minerals to help with assimilation. But as the saying goes, you can’t cheat Mother Nature!

So, AGAIN, it is best to use the whole plant to achieve its maximum benefits. A high-quality turmeric extract will work better than a curcumin one.

TO THE PLANETS HEALTH!

Pure Synergy cares about the quality of your health. This should be a no-brainer since they are in the business of offering high-quality products that help boost immune systems, promote anti-aging, protect heart and liver health, skin, and eye care… the list goes on.

But, Pure Synergy also has an eco-friendly mission. THEY REALLY CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT. Our home. Planet Earth. A lot of what ends up on our plates cause horrific damage to our ecosystem. We, as a species, can not keep going down this road. Something has got to give. Supporting companies that care about Mother Earth is a great place to start.

THEY HAVE CUSTOM-BUILT GREEN FACILITIES. Pure Synergy is located in Moab, Utah. They decided to build their own facilities to minimize the carbon footprint. Pure Synergy has chosen to use water-conserving landscaping (xeriscaping), low-flow sanitation systems, energy-efficient equipment. Automatic light sensors, and have positioned buildings to make the best use of the sun to conserve energy.

Moab, Utah is known for its beautiful Sandstone formations.

WINDPOWER, FOR THE SAKE OF HUMANITY. Well, truth be told, I am by no means against fossil fuels… until we can find something that really works.

However, Pure Synergy was the first company in Utah to convert to 100% WIND POWER with their electricity usage. Keep in mind a substantial amount of energy is needed to manufacture, store, and distribute their products.

They created a citywide initiative in Moab to get involved with “Blue Sky Wind Power”. They have helped 13% of Moab’s energy users to renewable energy sources.

ORGANIC AGRICULTURE, GET READY. Pure Synergy is proud of their decision to continuously grow, source, and advocate the development of non-GMO, ORGANIC ingredients for their beloved product line. This has been part of their creed and eco-friendly mission from the get-go.

Supporting organic farming practices reduces the depletion of resources as well as invigorate our planet’s nutrient-rich soils. Their commitment to organics was small at first, but now have several thousands of acres dedicated to organic farming.

SuperPure®… FORGET THE REST

What is SuperPure®? This is the processing method developed by PURE SYNERGY. It means safe. Safe for everybody… customers… workers… the ecosystem… the planet.

Their exclusive SuperPure process ensures that the products retain their maximum potency and help the user achieve the optimal benefit from that particular product. It also ensures that the products are pure and safe to consume.

One thing to be aware of in the supplemental health industry, a lot of companies will cut corners to produce their products. They may use cheap and potentially harmful chemicals and solvents in their processing. Always read labels to make sure they don’t toss in some toxins into their finished product. It kind of defeats the purpose of taking a supplement.

SAVED BY ECO-PACKAGING!

PURE SYNERGY also continues its green philosophy when it comes to packing and shipping their goods. Only recycled and recyclable padded eco-envelopes and paper are used. They condense their packaging so they can use smaller shipping boxes that have less of an impact on the environment. All packaging materials are 100 percent recyclable and reusable.

PURE SYNERGY only uses

  • biodegradable and organiccompliant cleaning agents
  • vegetable-based inks and water-based coatings for all printed materials
  • glass bottles for their products (easily recyclable)
  • extensive in-house recycling for all paper, plastic, glass, and metal
  • organic cotton

PURE SYNERGY never uses

  • genetically modified or irradiated ingredients
  • chemical processing aids in any product

QUALITY & TESTING… THE FUN NEVER STOPS!

Pure Synergy doesn’t take for granted that its proactive protocols lead to high-quality ingredients. They verify it by rigorous testing methods. They make sure heavy metals, microbes, pesticides, and solvent residues are not present in the finished product. They also make sure no dairy or gluten has contaminated the ingredients. GMOs are strictly forbidden.

As well as making sure unwanted ingredients are not present, they want to ensure that the vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and other active compounds are present in the merchandise. After testing… they test AGAIN!

SEE FOR YOURSELF! Pure Synergy can back their testing with a CERTIFICATE OF COMPLIANCE. Each certificate has a lot number, the number of tests performed, and the results of each product.

What are Stinging Nettle’s Benefits?

Do you hike? Are you someone who likes trekking through the woods? Maybe sometimes you like to cut through some thick roughage to check out something cool… like a creek or a river. Chances are you have brushed up against Stinging Nettle, if you live in the Eastern United States or Europe. You wouldn’t have forgotten it. Your skin will itch like crazy and you’ll have an overwhelming burning sensation for a few minutes. You should feel back to normal soon enough. The crazy thing is, the plant is extremely good for you. Are you aware of Stinging Nettle’s Benefits?

Nutrients… Empowering immune System Response!

If you are looking to add more natural vitamins and minerals... you have come to the right place! First things first. Everyone knows adding vitamins to your diet is a good thing. Stinging Nettle contains more vitamin A than carrots! Perfect for proper eye health and for a solid immune system.

It has vitamin C which is essential for cellular and arterial health. Vitamin K is also found in nettle. It is useful for maintaining bone and heart health. Vitamins B1, B2, B3, and B5 are also present in Stinging Nettle.

You can’t just talk about vitamins without mentioning their best friends… MINERALS. They go together like peas and carrots. Stinging Nettle contains calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium.

All of your essential amino acids take up residence in Stinging Nettle. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. They also make sure that your hormonal system works properly. Cells need hormones so they can function properly. Hormones are also important for sexual health, metabolism, respiration, movement, growth, and sensory perception. They are a BIG DEAL!

Phytonutrients also take up space in nettle. They are also known as phytochemicals. There are numerous types of phytonutrients. You are probably familiar with chlorophyll and beta-carotene. It also contains lutein (a type of vitamin), zeaxanthin (a carotenoid good for the eyes), quercetin (a plant flavonoid good for inflammation), and rutin

(a bioflavonoid that works as an antioxidant).

These nutrients behave as antioxidants in your body. Antioxidants help fend off free radical scavengers which can damage your cells and lead to early cell death which is NO BUENO!. Studies have demonstrated Stinging Nettles’s ability at raising bodily antioxidant levels. This, in turn, boosts your immune system response.

Go On, Get Your Anti-inflammatory Out!

Inflammation is tightly close-knit with many chronic diseases in modern times. In fact, it is recognized as one of the most significant causes of death worldwide. Strong statement? Well, if you consider the fact, it is associated with heart disease, diabetes, and cancer (with many others). These are some biggies when it comes to death by unnatural causes.

Stinging Nettle has been used for centuries in folk medicine for its natural anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. If you are looking for a natural way to alleviate osteoarthritis or other joint pain, Stinging Nettle may be able to help.

A study published in Molecules in 2018 demonstrated that people were able to reduce their non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs when combing them with nettles. The less prescription meds, the better. It also helps if you steer towards an anti-inflammatory diet.

I am just hoping that I never have to take a ride in one of these puppies!

Just What The Prostate Ordered

Prostate health should concern a lot of men over the age of 50. This is when those pesky doctors want to set you up for a test. It sounds too much like an alien abduction scenario to me. I always turn them down and DIG DEEP into prevention. I am probably wrong, but oh well, maybe the blood work will catch a problem.

Anyway, that is why I always keep my eye open for new ways to strengthen my immune system… naturally.

The funny thing is doctors haven’t a clue to what causes an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH), but there are ways to treat it. Well, guess what? You guessed right, stinging nettle helps treat one of the main symptoms… urinary problems.

An early warning signal is the need to relieve your bladder more frequently and having difficulty in getting the job done. Stinging Nettle has been shown to be effective in urinary tract infections and helping reduce calcium oxalate crystals which can develop into extremely painful kidney stones.

Stinging Nettle may also help slow your prostrates growth (if you have BPH). It is able to collaborate with your cells and affect your hormone levels. A study showed that those treated with nettle versus those that were only given a placebo had a more compelling reduction in their prostate size.

Stinging Nettle is commonly used in Europe for treating the symptoms of BPH. Research has shown it favorable in treating the symptoms of an enlarged prostate. No one has yet to discover which components within nettle have a POSITIVE EFFECT on your prostate health, the jury is still out. You should always consult with your physician if you think you have a problem.

Kidney beans… I didn’t want to gross you out by showing a real kidney!

Hay Fever… Play It Safe!

Seasonal allergies are a tremendous problem where I live… right smack in the middle of the Ohio Valley! Pollen is the primary rascal behind allergy season. There was a time when I was plagued by constant sinus infections. I have long since been hampered by pesky pollen invaders because of my devotion to morning algae shots.

But we are discussing Stinging Nettle, and I have just recently added it to my daily regime. It has another benefit that motivates me to consume it. However, Stinging Nettle is a holistic medicine fave for treating hay fever.

Scientists have yet to discover how nettle helps relieve allergy symptoms but some feel it is able to reduce inflammation in your body. Research has shown nettle as being able to disrupt your body’s histamine production.

Histamine is the source behind all the well-known allergy symptoms… inflammation… sinus issues… itching… headaches. Substances such as pollen induce your body to produce histamine. You are probably familiar with anti-histamines being used for sinus issues.

Blood Pressure… Endless Fun

Heart disease kills more people before their time than anything else. Untreated, it can lead to a heart attack or a stroke. So, if you have high blood pressure, this is an indication that something has gone wrong in your body.

Many things can cause high blood pressure. The primary reason is poor food choices. My blood pressure was getting too high a few years ago. My other vitals were also heading for the dog house. I made a quick decision after running into some research about whole-food plant-based diets. My health immediately turned around… just by changing my diet.

I am not trying to convert anyone to how I eat. We all have choices. What I am saying… MY HEALTH TURNED AROUND IMMEDIATELY!… along with countless others who have chosen to eat natural foods.

We live in a world obsessed with junk food. Processed food is man-made. It is not natural! It is full of sodium... table salt… which means the salt we most commonly use is processed as well. Sodium is entrenched in most processed foods. It is sooo bad for your system.

Fat is also a major health violator. Animal fats clog up your arteries and raise your blood pressure. Fat is the main culprit behind diabetes. Diabetes supposedly leads to high blood pressure, but I suspect the underlying factor is the fats not diabetes itself. This is well documented in the China study.

So if you’re not one to give up eating for pleasure, you got to find some other means to bring down your ole’ blood pressure. Stinging Nettle has been traditionally used to treat high blood pressure. Nettle is a popular plant used in Western herbal medicine.

Some test-tube and animal studies have indicated several ways nettle help lower blood pressure. First of all, it may stimulate nitric oxide production. This helps your blood vessels relax and dilate which helps lower your blood pressure.

Also, stinging nettle compounds may behave as calcium channel blockers. This helps expand your arteries and relax your heart. People can use nettle as a diuretic. To make you pass urine more often. This should help you pass more water in your urine and help lower your blood pressure.

Are you getting your fair share of FAKE FOOD?

Change Your Whole Blood Sugar

Diabetes is a partner in crime with heart disease. Zapping the lives of many humans worldwide WAY TOO SOON! Food again is behind the scenes challenging multitudes of lives by polluting the bloodstream. I will stick to my guns. A WHOLE-FOOD PLANT-BASED DIET is a pathway to freedom. GOOGLE IT… BING IT… or whatever, if you’re curious.

Most people desire short cuts in life… and sitting around like a frog on a log. Certain foods can help lower blood sugar. Apple cider vinegar does the trick, or find a good source of amla fruit powder. But gaining attention is an old-time fave from traditional folk medicine… stinging nettle… which also support healthier blood sugar levels.

Studies have shown stinging nettle has helped improve hyperglycemia by helping to restore insulin levels. There was a study done over a three-month period with 46 people. They were given 500 mg of stinging nettle extract three times a day. The participants showed significantly lower blood sugar levels compared to those who were given a placebo.

There is some solid supporting evidence in stinging nettle’s effectiveness in lowering blood sugar. If you have diabetes, it would be to your best advantage to do everything possible in controlling your blood sugar. Diabetes, when left unchecked, has a devastating effect on your health. You don’t want to go there. So put down those Twinkies!

All You Need Is Digestion

Let’s face it. Most people don’t really think twice about what they eat. If you are reading a post like this, I imagine you have broken loose from the herd. People who see how I eat are constantly snickering and saying they would never eat that way, and you can bet the ones that say that are grossly overweight and don’t seem to healthy.

There are so many chemicals and additives in processed foods. The sad thing is most people just ignore reading the label or ordering from restaurants and trusting that they hold your best interests at heart. Very few restaurants spend the extra money to ensure they are using all-natural ingredients without preservatives.

Put it simply, you are eating manufactured foods in many cases. Your body doesn’t know what to do with these fake foods. Some of these items become free radicals and harm your cells. Your stomach doesn’t know how to process them. Your stomach is designed to handle food from nature… whole food.

Our grocery stores and drug stores are full of anti-acids or fiber supplements to handle some of these unnatural foods that are eaten in multitudes. Inflammation occurs when your body is trying to counter-attack things that don’t belong in your system. Inflammation is behind almost every chronic disease plaguing mankind.

Exorbitant inflammation impedes your digestive process. Harmful bacteria grow out of control in your digestive tract. You will probably get sick more. Changing to a whole-food plant-based diet will work wonders and turn your digestive problems around… if you have them… or maybe you aren’t in tune with your body.

Stinging nettle has awesome anti-inflammatory powers. It is better for you than drug store chemicals. It can help you go regular in your digestive process. Constipation, diarrhea, and upset stomach can be reduced. However, if you switch to a whole-food plant-based diet, it will clean your system out and you will get a temporary case of diarrhea. This also happens when you use colon cleansers.

Nettle may help promote healthy bacteria which will go to bat for you and help you straighten out your digestive issues. Having a healthy gut can help protect you from a host of diseases. Keeping a healthy gut helps you age more gracefully.

There Is No Life Without Nettle Tea!

One of the best ways to add stinging nettle to your life is to make a nettle tea. I personally add nettle leaves to filtered water along with some green tea and bring it to a boil. I’ll let it simmer for a few minutes and pull it off the heat. I then let it sit for a bit so more of the nutrients can seep into the hot water.

Use a heaping tablespoon of nettle leaves per 8 ounces of water. One ounce of dried leaves is equal to about 4 ounces of fresh. I don’t intend to go itching through nettle fields to obtain the leaves. It doesn’t feel so nice. The leaves are pretty easy to obtain from an online store.

The tea doesn’t have a bad flavor. I drink it with green tea at times without any kind of sweetener. It isn’t bitter.

If you wish, once you pull it off the heat, you can steep the tea for up to ten hours so you can pull more of the nutrients out. Hot and cold water combinations will draw out different nutritional components from the plant. Make sure you cover up the infused nettle. You can then strain it and put it in the refrigerator (if you make a larger batch).

So what you have here is a beverage high in vitamins and minerals… all-natural…  which assimilates with ease into your body. Basically a liquid salad.

Let’s Talk About Side-effects!

There is always a chance for side-effects from natural foods. Strawberries and peanuts are common foods in which some people are allergic to.

I have already mentioned at the beginning of this article how nettle can cause severe itching for a brief period. There are hair-like barbs on the stems of the plant. Trust me, it will cause a moment of distress until you find your way out of the plants… and they crowd together like penguins in Antarctica.

Nettle barbs are slightly venomous. They can inject several chemical compounds into your skin. In rare cases, a severe allergic reaction can occur which could end up being life-threatening. A similar situation can happen with a bee sting. Only a limited number of people suffer from this. So if you develop hives from whatever, you are having an allergic reaction.

Pregnant women should probably avoid nettle until delivery. It could induce contractions in the uterus. This could lead to a miscarriage.

Certain medications may have a negative reaction with stinging nettle. If you are on blood thinners or blood pressure medication, diuretics (water pills… nettle already acts like a diuretic), and lithium.

Diabetics should proceed with caution since this could lower blood sugar… especially when on insulin. Carefully monitoring and working with a physician is highly advisable.

Conclusion

I hope I’ve presented a strong case here for you to consider adding stinging nettle to your ongoing health program… if you have one. You really should take time out of your day for your wellness, so you can have more days… or be able to enjoy your days.

The thing that pops out for me is blood sugar control and prostate health. Diabetes is a growing worldwide concern, and I have already been bitten by that bug. The research on blood sugar looks promising, and I just need to remember to drink more nettle tea. It really doesn’t taste bad.

Prostate health declines in a huge percentage of men and should not be tread lightly. The research looks solid with regards to prostate health.

To recap some other benefits:

  • antioxidant power
  • offers pain relief. Serotonin and other neurotransmitters are found in the plant’s compounds.
  • Acts as an antiviral and anti-bacterial
  • may help decrease inflammation
  • offers anti-cancer support
  • digestive support

So if you’re a tea lover, mix in some nettle leaves for a healthier immune system. Nettle has an abundant source of vitamins and minerals and is a wonderfully nutritious food to add to your diet.

Are Figs Healthy? What are the benefits from Eating Figs?

Do you know what a fig is? Something to do with a cookie? Most people where I am from think of Fig Newtons when anyone mentions figs. Figs belong to the Ficus tree family. Did you know that figs aren’t really a fruit? They are inverted flowers. Whatever they may be, figs are another one of nature’s SUPERFOODS! Having said that… WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FROM EATING FIGS?

EVERYTHING WORKS BETTER WITH SUPERFOOD!

These puppies are generous with nutrients. You kind of need that to be a superfood. Nature has provided us with everything we need for optimum health… if only we could put down those Oreos for a sec and grab a bite from the goodness of nature.

Figs are oozing with fiber for starters. You will also find it is home to many essential minerals like magnesium, manganese, calcium, copper, and potassium. B Vitamins and vitamin K also take refuge inside of figs. A powerhouse of goodness!

HOWEVER,… dried figs actually pack more nutritional value than fresh ones. One dry fig can stand up proudly nutritionally against an egg (without the negative consequences that eggs bring to the table). Figs in either form are also a great source of antioxidants. All of these wonderful nutrients BOOST UP YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM!

DIGESTION, ON DEMAND!

Figs have been a popular home remedy for digestive health for thousands of years. Fiber is king when it comes to regularity and cleaning out intestinal tracts. Fiber helps by promoting stool health and keeping everything flowing.
We kind of have to talk about this, sometimes. Stomach ailments can ruin a good day or moment.

Figs also act as a prebiotic. What is this? This is health food for your gut’s healthy bacteria. Many diseases and ailments start in your stomach. Probiotics are healthy bacteria. Feed the good bacteria to fight off nasty bacteria and viruses that invade your digestive tract.

Figs can also help prevent colon cancer. The key to keeping your colon healthy is prevention. Many things in life are not complicated. Negligence is our biggest problem as a species. It is a choice of either eating healthy foods rich in fiber or eating dead things that clog up and inflame your digestive tract. Making sure that you have a regular flow and clean out your intestines is paramount for optimum health.

A diet rich in fiber promotes good digestion

ALL YOU NEED IS HEART!

Show your heart some figs. They may improve your blood pressure and blood fats (know in doctor-speak as triglycerides). Your heart health depends on healthy blood pressure and flow. Maintaining blood flow should be a concern for anyone who wants to stick around a little longer… however, not everyone wants to or at least don’t act like they do the way they cram donuts down their gullet.

Fig leaf extract is also good for your well-being. They help with improving cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Fig leaves are also good for blood sugar… and were quite fashionable in THE GARDEN OF EDEN.

How are figs able to lower blood pressure? Bananas are known for potassium. Figs contain a healthy dose too. Potassium helps control blood pressure. Diets loaded in sodium and low potassium diets contribute heavily to hypertension (high blood pressure). As you may know, the modern diet is overrun with sodium.

Pectin is a soluble fiber. It’s known for its ability to reduce cholesterol levels. Pectin is found inside figs. The fiber in figs also helps cholesterol exit your system in a timely manner.

Figs are also home to vitamin B6. This wonder vitamin’s main job is to create serotonin which is known as a mood booster, but it also plays a role in lowering cholesterol. Dry figs also contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids which are beneficial for your heart’s health.

       Delicious, but deadly

BUILT BLOOD SUGAR TOUGH!

Figs are high in sugar… especially dried figs. Your blood sugar levels will amp up for a bit. If diabetic, pay attention to how they react with your blood sugar. But, if you need to get a handle on your sugars, the real benefit from the fig tree is from the leaf. You can purchase the leaves and make a tea for blood sugar support.

Leaves from fig trees may have insulin lowering properties. If you are on dependent upon insulin, drinking the tea may help you lower your dosage. Fig leaves have also been shown to regulate blood sugar levels. You can purchase tea leaves online. Diabetics should give it a go. Half of the world’s population is headed this way, so fig tea may become popular in the near future

SKIN… WE BUILD SMILES

Figs may offer positive effects on your skin. So, go grab a bag of Fig Newtons… break open a cookie and rub the insides on your skin… just joshing ya.

But seriously, a study involving using a cream made from dried fig fruit extract and applying the solution 2x a day (for 2 weeks) was shown to be more effective than hydrocortisone cream for treating dermatitis symptoms. (Study at the bottom of the post).

Fig leaf has struck again. There are numerous lotions in the marketplace featuring fig leaf. Something must be working. Lotions are also made with the fruit itself (or outside-in flower if you prefer). The same vitamins and minerals that are good for your insides also benefit your largest organ (skin).

A study including a combination of fruit extracts (fig included) demonstrated antioxidant effects on skin cells, improvement in wrinkles, and its ability to slow down collagen breakdown. This study included a few other extracts, but other tests have been done with fig extract by its lonesome.

Nobody likes skin melanin. Your face gets all splotchy and splatty. Not a good look for sure. Fig fruit extract can help reduce its tragic effects. It also helps put the brakes on trans-epidermal water loss and skin sebum.(natural skin oils from the sebaceous glands). So what is the skinny on all of this? Figs may offer a natural remedy for hyperpigmentation, acne, freckles, and wrinkled skin.

On a side note… Warts are ugly blemishes shooting out of your skin. Fig tree latex may be able to help. It has been able to resolve 44% percent of the cases. Warts are stubborn little beasts! I have not been able to get rid of one. But give it a try if you have a wart you want gone.

You can also make a face mask with fresh figs… no not for COVID!… you can scoop out the flesh and mash it up… add it to some sticky raw honey or yogurt and spread it on your face for 5 to 15 minutes. This can enhance your skin’s texture and beautifies your face. Wash it off when you are done.

I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR FIGS

Macular degeneration. Not a welcomed thing. As you age your vision usually declines. A natural nasty ailment of life. In defense, arm yourself with nature’s greatest warriors in fighting back the insidious effects of aging.

Keep on chomping on those carrots… they do help. But, the fruit may offer you more benefits for maintaining your precious eye health. An Ophthalmology study recommends eating at least three servings of fruit a day to slow down the wheels of macular degeneration. I am forever amazed at how few people even eat fruit… unless it’s strawberry ice cream.

Figs contain the essential nutrients for eye health. Mix figs with other fruits for optimal eye health. I start my day off with a fruit bowl with bananas, blueberries and an assortment of other wonderful fruits. Figs are a delicious snack (as well as dates) if you want to cure a sweet tooth in a healthy manner.

THE INCREDIBLE, EDIBLE HISTORY OF FIGS

The Earliest mention of figs in history is… oh yeah, the Garden of Eden. If you can believe such a story. Anywho, figs have been with mankind for a very long time. It’s mentioned again and again in the Bible’s scriptures.

Now go back further in time… I guess. History is confusing and one never really knows the truth considering the plague of the human ego. However, the proof is in the pudding. Egypt appears to be the first civilization taking a crack at cultivating fig trees. Remnants of figs have been found at Neolithic sites going back 7000 years.

I would think that figs have been used even way before that. Modern-day primates utilize figs for medicinal purposes. If that is going on with our closest cousins, then mankind has been toying around with figs since the dawn of time.

So eventually they meandered their way over to Crete then Greece. There they became a staple food. The Romans loved aping the Greeks and soon revered the fig. Roman myth states that the wolf who nurtured poor little Romulus and Remus (the twin founders of Rome) did so under the protection of a fig tree.

The Spaniards grabbed the reins next. Missionaries brought the fig tree to the new world. California is now one of the top producers of figs along with Turkey, Greece, Portugal, and Spain. It would seem that figs thrive in a Mediterranean climate.

Figs also made their way to the Far East and landed in China. They are thought to be native to a region spanning from Turkey to India. Western history seems to be kept separate from Asian history. Recorded history is such a mess. India also adores and reveres figs, and has a rich history of natural medicine.

Fig leaves went out of fashion as soon as Eve offered one of these beauties to Adam!

FOR THE LOVE OF FIG TYPES!

There are about 700 varieties of fig trees grown worldwide. But, there are only 5 common varieties of figs. They all have their own unique flavor and sweetness. So, Drum roll, please…

Black Mission Black to purple on the outside with a pink inside. These figs are ridiculously sweet and have a syrup-like juice. They are wonderful to eat as a dessert or toss them in your favorite cake or cookie recipe.

Kadota Green in color with a purple inside. They are the least sweet of all fig types. They are great to eat raw or heated.

Calimyrna Greenish-yellow on the outside with an ambered color inside. They are larger than other figs and have a nutty flavor.

Brown Turkey Purple skin and pink flesh. They have a milder flavor and are less sweet than most other figs. An excellent fig to add to your salad.

Adriatic Light green skin with pink flesh. These are the figs used in making fig bars. They are also known as white figs since they have a lighter color. This is an insanely sweet fig and choice for desserts.

WE ALL ADORE BUYING

Figs are extremely perishable. They will start to go bad within days after buying them, so be ready to chow down soon after buying them fresh. Look for figs that have a deep color and are plump and tender. Avoid if too mushy. Look for firm stems and make sure they are not bruised. Smell them to make sure they aren’t going bad.

As the fruit ripens, their antioxidant levels increase. The richer the color, the better. You see this in tomatoes as they reach their peak color. Ripe figs should have a mild sweet fragrance. A fig will start to smell sour when it goes bad.

Dry figs are more easily manageable and easier to purchase. Dry figs actually are more nutritious. You want to make sure they’re a little soft and free from mold. If they are prepackaged, they should be fine. If you go organic, they will less likely be contaminated with pesticides. Look for the USDA organic logo.

If you find some ripe figs, they will last a couple of days in your fridge. Cover or wrap them so they don’t dry out. Dried figs will stay good for several months. You can store them in a cool, dark place or set them in your refrigerator. Keep them wrapped up to avoid being overexposed to air.

FAQs

Are figs an aphrodisiac? Figs are thought of as being useful for fertility and as a sexual supplement. Figs are rich in calcium, iron, potassium, and zinc. They also contain the mineral magnesium which helps produce sex hormones like androgen and estrogen:

Many cultures have considered figs as a symbol of fertility. Figs also produce an amino acid that helps increase your body’s nitric oxide which expands blood vessels and increases blood flow throughout your body. This includes sexual organs. Are they a quick fix for problems in the bedroom? Probably not, however, it is one of the gifts from nature that helps your body restore itself to health.

Can figs treat a sore throat? Figs are high in mucilage. This is a thick gelatinous substance found in plants. It can help protect and heal your throat. I wonder if Mucinex derived its name from mucilage? I suspect that it did just that.

So, the juice from figs would be a great tool from nature’s tool kit to help you… or grab some lemon, raw honey, and ginger and make a tea.

Figs may also help with tonsillitis. I feel jaded. I always wanted tonsillitis when I was a kid because I was told they only feed you ice cream while you are recovering. Anyway, make a paste with fig flesh and warm water and apply it to your throat. It is said to reduce pain and soothe your throat.

Will you sleep better if you eat figs? Figs contain an amino acid called tryptophan which will help your body create melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone your brain produces in response to darkness. It helps you sleep.

You can find melatonin products in the store, but be careful using them. You shouldn’t use melatonin every day. In my experience, I have a negative reaction when I take it. Getting melatonin naturally from the plant kingdom must be better for you.

Figs are also home to omega-3 fatty acids. This also helps up the quality of your slumber. Tryptophan also helps vitamin B3 assimilate inside your body. Lack of Vitamin B3 may make you restless, irritable, and discontent. (so can too much java). This can ruin any chance of a good night’s sleep.

Figs also have plenty of magnesium. I used to use magnesium glycinate to help me sleep. It works better than melatonin for me. Melatonin supplements have too many bad side effects in my experience… weird dreams and disrupted sleep.

.Nothing better than sleeping like a baby

Can figs help fight cancer? Other parts of the fig tree have beneficial effects for people. In the case of cancer, fig leaves and natural latex from fig trees have been shown to promote anti-tumor activity in numerous cancers. These studies have only been performed with test tubes, so the jury is still out

Are wasps sometimes found in figs? Figs technically are not fruits but inverted flowers. Figs bloom internally, and they still require pollination. Bees have passed on taking this job, so fig trees have made a deal with fig wasps. They depend on each other. Wasps slip inside the fig and leave a gift… larvae… in return, the wasp pollinates the fig.

The shape of the fig accommodates the laying of wasp eggs, Males don’t get out alive. The females climb out and pollinate other figs. I guess figs do not qualify as vegan. I personally still eat figs after finding this out. WEIRD!!!

How to Prepare and Eat Figs

Fresh figs are really hard to come by. There is such a short window once they are ripe to enjoy fresh. Fresh figs are also delicate and should be handled with care. Rinse them off with cool water and gently dry them off. You can eat them with their skin intact and are simply scrumptious raw.

Figs are also delightful baked, broiled, caramelized, or roasted. I have provided many culinary ideals on the links below. A plethora of recipes! If you score some fresh figs, you can also preserve them by drying, steeping in liquor, making fig jams, and pickling them. Bon appetit!!

Aaahh, PRECAUTION

Some cultivated figs may be treated with sulfur-containing compounds to prolong shelf life. Check the label for a list of ingredients. Look for contains figs (only). It’s possible to have an adverse reaction to certain chemicals.

There is always a chance of an allergic reaction. If you have a birch pollen allergy, chances are you will be allergic to figs. You could always pay for one of those allergy tests to see what foods you are sensitive to.

I had an allergic reaction to something once. I ended up in a hospital. I was waiting tables in a fine dining restaurant and we tried a bunch of dishes for a Kentucky Derby dinner. I thought it was the lobster and avoided seafood for a while. Turns out I don’t have a seafood allergy. We tried a bunch of Mediterranean food that night with some spices I had never encountered. I suspect it was probably one of those spices. My doctor could not order me a test under my medical plan. I passed on paying out-of-pocket. Maybe one day if this happens again.

Figs, like many other foods, may interfere with blood-thinning medications. Glad I don’t take those. Overeating figs may also cause diarrhea because of the high fiber content. Diabetics should be careful about how much they eat, of course… high in natural sugars

Figs are fruit and relatively safe. They are delicious and make a great sweet tooth fix.

Final Thoughts

Fruit should be a staple to everyone’s diet. It’s the perfect food for the human diet. It supplies us with fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants for maintaining optimum health. The two best fruit for a sweet tooth are figs and dates. You only need a few of them to settle a sweet craving. Thanks for reading.

Many blessings, Brian.

What are the Health Benefits from Chia Seeds?

Chia Seeds. They have become extremely popular in recent years. Do you remember chia pets? You may recall their popular jingle… cha cha chia! You can still find chia pets. Lowes sells one with BABY YODA. Did you know that you can actually eat chia seeds? They are also good for you, so what are the health benefits from CHIA SEEDS?

How do Chia Seeds Benefit You?

THEY’RE A NUTRITIONAL POWERHOUSE! Chia seeds are crammed full of nutrients… even though they are tiny little things. One ounce provides you with about half of your daily fiber requirement (ounce equals 11 grams of fiber). Fiber is important for your digestive system. It helps clean out your intestines and PROMOTES healthy gut microbiota.

These itty bitty seeds are also a good source of iron. You boost up your red cell count and its performance with iron. Iron helps make hemoglobin. This is a protein in red blood cells that help move blood from your lungs to all parts of your body.

Chia seeds are also a good source of plant protein. An ounce of seeds will provide you with 5 grams of healthy protein. Chia seeds have 9 grams of fat per ounce, so if you’re safeguarding your fat intake, keep that in mind. You will also receive a nice dose of magnesium and calcium from an ounce of chia seeds. Chia seeds are also loaded with healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

All of these essential elements create an abundance of energy in your body. These wonder seeds are just loaded with all kinds of goodies.

WHAT’S BETTER THAN HEART! More people check out from our planet from heart disease more than any other human ailment… and the odds can go way down if only you show your heart more love. The best choice you could make is to stop ramming heart-damaging food down your throat. Or at least limit them to special cheat days.

Now, chia seeds can help protect your heart, it’s a superfood, but not a miracle food. Food rich in fiber helps lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. 67 controlled trial studies demonstrated that a humble 10-gram increase of fiber intake could reduce your bad cholesterol level. Yes… chia seeds have that covered. Fiber also helps lower inflammation in your cardiovascular system.

Chia seeds are brimming with plant-based OMEGA- 3 fatty acids. These are essential fatty acids that provide many benefits for your body. Certain fish species are high in omega-3s, but the problem is the oceans are so full of toxins. Plant-based options are so much better for your overall health.

Omega-3s deter the build-up of plaque in your arteries. They also help reduce triglycerides (a type of fat found in the blood) and assist in lowering blood pressure…and finally, they can reduce your risk of developing an arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats).

STEP INTO THE HEALTHY FLOW! Life is good when your digestion is JUST right…when things run regular… and smooth… Soak your chia seeds in some filtered water and let them expand into a gel. This is what happens when any soluble fiber comes in contact with water. Add this gel to fruit or salads.

Soluble fiber bulks up your stool and transcends healthy gut bacteria into a feeding frenzy. Fiber improves your overall digestive environment. Now, as you may know, fiber can’t be digested… like corn! As it makes its tour through your digestive system… it cleans things up. Things like nasty bacteria and toxins. A healthy digestive system is so important for your overall health.

Chia seeds may prevent constipation. One of the main ways people become constipated is when their stools become dry and hard. At this point, it is quite a chore to move these puppies through your system. They get stuck in limbo. So, most people reach for BIG PHARMA to save the day. Prevention is always king in my world.

Since we are discussing digestive tracts… Diverticulitis is an unwelcome flare-up in your colon. A friend of mine developed a serious case 10 years ago and they had to disconnect part of his digestive tract for a WHOLE YEAR! Ouch!!!

Diets in fiber are extremely important to keep this heinous condition away. So again… healthy digestion is so important. Keeping your digestive tract clean is vital. This is why doctors always want to check colons for cancer when you reach a certain age. Keeping yourself cleaned out is critical for long-term health.

BETTER INGREDIENTS, BETTER WEIGHT LOSS! Fiber makes you feel full for longer periods of time… And, I just discussed how soluble fiber helps move things along in your digestive tract. Fruits, vegetables, and seeds are the champions in the world of fiber. These food groups are usually lower in calories and not the problem when it comes to weight gain. This includes POTATOES! I thrive on potatoes and my weight keeps going down.

When you make a chia seed gel (add water), this will help you feel full for longer. Again, chia seeds are high in protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and alpha-linolenic acid. Combined, these elements are handy in losing weight

So, are chia seeds a magic weight loss pill? Not likely. You have to go all out and change everything about the way you eat if you really want results. However, studies have shown chia seeds as being pretty effective in appetite suppression. They are also able to signal your brain that you’re full.

GET THE DIABETES OUT! Are chia seeds the holy grail for reversing diabetes? I hardly think so. Reversing diabetes is possible by following a certain strategy. Chia seeds can play a role in getting better results in your sugars.

Not a lot of research has been performed on the effects of chia seeds on blood glucose, but a 2017 study proposes that chia may convert glucose into a slow-release carbohydrate. Chia seeds may help stabilize blood sugar levels and enhance insulin sensitivity. It also helps halt blood sugar spikes after meals when added to your food.

PRAISE SLEEP! I suffered for years from poor sleep. At one point I tried one of those sleep machine apparatuses. Man, that really sucked! I just couldn’t use that thingie. I actually use a sleep strap now and I am able to wake up more refreshed.

Within the last 19 months, I converted to a whole-food plant-based diet and consume blue-green algae every morning. I am providing my body with essential nutrients, and my sleep has improved dramatically.

I have also used magnesium glycinate to help me fall asleep faster. I don’t need it anymore because I am getting my magnesium from other food sources. Chia seeds are a good source of magnesium, but you need to consume over 100 grams (3.5 oz) to get your recommended daily.

Dehydration is another reason you may wake up feeling dog tired. Especially if you tied one on at the bar last night…well at least before COVID. You may also awaken to a nasty smelling morning breath. What this means is you are not producing enough saliva.

Saliva is your body’s natural disinfectant. Its job is to wipe out mouth bacteria. Chia seeds are an excellent way to keep your body hydrated. But, you need to add liquid to the seeds before consuming them because they will soak up the liquid already in your body and could possibly cause a blockage (like in your throat). Yes, you could choke on chia seeds! As well as other fibers. Adding water to soluble fiber does cause it to expand. This is why throwing rice at weddings is not advisable anymore. Birds eat it. The rice expands when liquid encounters it in their stomach… not good for the bird!

And the best case for better sleep...CHIA SEEDS ARE LOADED WITH TRYPTOPHAN! You know! That stuff in TURKEY that makes you pass out on your Lazy Boy every Thanksgiving.

Tryptophan is one of your body’s essential amino acids. This amino acid is fantastic for combating depression and anxiety. You see… tryptophan converts to SEROTONIN. Low serotonin levels equal to many unhappy days. There is much food straight out of nature that can provide a much-needed mood boost… especially in these times.

RUN FORREST, RUN. What a great movie. It is easily my favorite movie. There is a part in the movie where Forrest runs from coast-to-coast numerous times. It’s one of the sillier parts of the movie. Doesn’t seem possible… at all!

There exists in Mexico a tribe of RUNNING PEOPLE! The TARAHUMARA. This is a tribe of super athletes who run for 50 to 100 miles at a time. ALL FOR FUN AND FOR FREE! It seems that they are able to do this without much effort

What do they eat, you may ask? The staple of their diet is PINOLE and CHIA SEEDS. To make pinole, you would start off with a base of masa harina. (cornmeal treated with lime) Then they would add some agave nectar or honey to sweeten it, put in some cinnamon, and finally throw in some chia seeds. They would heat it all up into a cake and munch on it as they traverse the Mexican terrain. THIS IS MIND-BOGGLING!

GOOD TO THE LAST CELLS! Do you know what is really great about omega-3 fatty acids? It helps increase cell membrane permeability. What in the world is that? This means it helps increase the flexibility of your cell walls. This is good news because it helps prevent cell damage. Sick cells lead to early aging and possibly cancer.

Who doesn’t want to be more quick-witted! Omega-3s can help increase signals between your brain neurons. Cells are always communicating with each other. There is this whole other fantastic world going on inside the human body. Your ego not needed to be involved.

So, you see… omega-3s are some sort of brain food... this is how fish have gotten known for this. You don’t have to fish in tainted seas to receive your daily omega 3 fatty acids. Chia seeds are a very good source. You can add chia seeds to water and create a gel… add this to a bowl of fruit in the morning to get your omega-3s.

I HAVE A BONE TO PICK WITH YOU. Many of us are familiar with the association between calcium and strong bones. Chia seeds are a great source of calcium and other minerals for solid bone health. (like phosphorus).

Phosphorus is the 2nd most abundant mineral in your body. The main function of phosphorus in the human body is bones and teeth. However, add some B vitamins into the mix and phosphorus helps with kidney function, nerve signals, muscle contractions, and a normal heartbeat. You will also find B vitamins in chia seeds.

Chia seeds also help relieve inflammation in your joints and reduce joint pain. Adding these minerals to your diet will also help increase your connective tissues and help build more muscle strength.

What In The Blazes Are Chia Seeds?

Chia seeds are little bitty things. They have a white to gray base and are speckled brown and black. They are hydrophilic. This means they can absorb twelve times their weight. And, they are chocked full of nutrients as described above.

Chia seeds are native to the New World. A staple food for Ancient Aztecs. Evidence shows that chia seeds were cultivated in pre-Columbian times, and was a highly regarded crop like maize (corn). Only corn and beans were seen as more important than chia seeds to these people. Chia seeds today are grown all over Latin America as well as Australia.

Pre-Columbian drawing

Bring Out The Sprouts

Yea, about that chia pet. Those little sprouts are power charged with nutrition. They grow really easy. Recently I had these nasty little insects called pantry moths. I opened up my jar of chia seeds and noticed cobwebs. Pantry moths had gotten into everything, and before you know it, you will see larva swimming around in whatever they invade. I think I didn’t secure the lid of the jar and they got in. (by the way… pantry moths will eat through plastic)

So… I tossed them outside in some planters. We were already in October when I did so. The sprouts were coming up everywhere. Just like that.

Consuming chia seeds supplies your body with many loving nutrients. But sprouts are even better for you. The sprouting process breaks down some starch which increases the percentages of the nutrients. This also makes chia more bioabsorbable. Your body can access more of the food’s nutrition

It’s All Just Black and White

Chia seeds are essentially the same. However, there are subtle differences. There isn’t a white chia seed plant nor a black chia seed one. They all come from the same plant. Basically, they can appear white to gray and are speckled. They give the appearance of a black seed when entirely mottled.

The plants produce more “black” seeds: however, cultivators have separated the seeds and have produced plants with a higher percentage of white seeds or a higher percent of black.

White seeds are higher in omega-3 fatty acid content. Black seeds normally have more protein and can lead to higher crop yields (which farmers love). But, the differences are marginal at best and many believe there really is no difference.

Now For Dinner!

How do you go about eating these healthy little wonders? For starters, if you are a smoothie lover, then you just toss them into the mix. Chia seeds have a mild nutty flavor and will not overpower the flavor of whatever you are eating or drinking.

Sprinkle them onto your salad or add them to a homemade dressing. I have added them to a homemade slaw. You can bake them in bread or muffins. You can make homemade energy bars like the super running natives of Mexico. A lot of marathon runners are paying attention to these super runners.

I have at this moment a chia pudding sitting in my fridge. I made homemade oat milk. (oats and filtered water in a ninja… takes less than a minute) Use about a cup and a half of milk. Add a quarter cup of organic cocoa, a tiny bit of vanilla extract, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and 3 to 5 tablespoons of agave or maple syrup. Mix it up. Stir in a half cup of chia seeds and stir them in. Put in the fridge for 5 hours and walla… delicious healthy pudding.

For those on a plant-based diet… chia seeds make an excellent egg replacement for baking recipes. Mix a tablespoon of chia to 3 tablespoons of water. Let it soak for 15 minutes. End result… a healthy egg replacement.

Don’t forget about the sprouts. Invest in an affordable sprouter and grow some chia sprouts. Add them to salads or sandwiches. You can fit these little cuties into your life with a little awareness and creativity. Happy eating.

P.S. You can store them for 4 to 5 years. But, watch out for pantry moths… ugggghh!

Danger Will Robinson!!!

Finally,… ARE CHIA SEEDS SAFE? Are there any precautions you should take? Do not try to swallow a spoon full of chia seeds straight and chase it with a glass of water. A man in North Carolina did just that. The seeds formed into a thick gel-like substance in his esophagus and found he could no longer swallow. He required medical treatment to fix the issue.

This is rare, but it shows how important it is to add liquid or mix the chia seeds into food before consuming it. People with swallowing problems should proceed with caution and try to avoid giving toddlers chia seeds to munch on.

Although rare, some people are allergic to chia seeds. This can happen with any food group, but some like peanuts are more common.

Final Thoughts

If you prepare your own food at home, it’s real easy to slip in some chia seeds here and there. I add some to my fruit bowl in the morning or in my salads. My next project is to invest in a better sprouter and start adding these healthy sprouts to my meal plan.

There are so many healthy elements inside chia seeds, it needs to remain a staple in my diet… just like the super runners and the ancient Aztecs. Happy Eating.

Many Blessings, Brian.

What is Triphala Fruit and Where Can You Buy It?

Triphala is widely used in India. It is a traditional homeopathic remedy in Ayurvedic medicine. This is an ancient Indian medical system that utilizes natural resources for its formulations… mostly from the plant kingdom… they also used animals, metals, and minerals… recommended more than any other Ayurvedic formulation, but what is Triphala fruit?

To sum it up. Triphala is a combination of 3 tropical Indian forest fruits. They work wonders on their own, but something more magical happens when they are joined in unison. The whole is greater than its individual parts… sorta like the Beatles!

  • AMALAKI, or generally referred to as Amla or Indian Gooseberry, is the all-star of the trio. Amla has way more antioxidants than any other fruit. This superfood offers excellent immune system support. It also helps controls blood sugar levels, is a wonderful anti-inflammatory, and is often used for digestive issues in India.
  • BIBHITAKI is loaded with linoleic acid works wonders for your cardiovascular system. It also helps improve insulin sensitivity and blood pressure. It also helps reduce body fat.
  • HARITAKI is used for healthy bowel function (elimination and regularity). It supports a healthy liver and it has a calming effect which helps with anxiety issues.

I have covered TRIPHALA in great detail in an earlier post. If you are not familiar with triphala, follow this link!

India has a storied history offering the world many wonders such as yoga, Vedic philosophy, and Ayurvedic Medicine.

Below I have reviewed several popular Triphala products that are available on Amazon. I am an affiliate there and receive a small commission if you decide to make a purchase. Anything you buy on Amazon supports an affiliate somewhere and has no effect on the actual price offered at Amazon. Thanks for visiting my site.

Starting back in the 1990s, the founders of Organic India approached local farmers in India in an attempt to get them to convert to organic farming methods. The farmers were skeptical. They had every reason to be. They tried to industrialize the farming community in the 1960s. This pursuit of industrializing the agricultural community was a complete failure.

Communities were destroyed and the environment was damaged. Farmers ended up in debt and in poverty. Who could blame them for not trusting outsiders with a new scheme.  Organic India was finally able to recruit some farmers to join their mission.

Organic India shared some common beliefs with the farming community. They desired to bring back the old ways and recover some traditional agricultural wisdom. They set out to reestablish healthy farmlands and thriving forests.

Their business model places importance on sound social, economical, and environmental standards. They also believe in fair trade in regard to their farmer partnerships.

Organic India has joined forces with thousands of individual farming families spanning the Indian subcontinent. This has helped develop strong communities by bringing a higher quality of life to these villages.

These farmers apply a holistic, ecological, and ethical approach to farming. No synthetic chemicals are used. No GMO or irradiation is permitted.

Organic India is dedicated to being a trustworthy and global leader in providing healthy organic products to the world.

F.A.Q.s

How are The herbs processed? First thing, all the herbs are grown using organic farming methods. Then they naturally are air-dried, in the sun or shade (depending on the requirements of each plant). Once dry, the herbs are processed in their own certified organic facilities.

The herbs are ground into a 30 mesh particle size. This helps maintain the herb’s botanical integrity. Then the products undergo a dry steam sterilization process to meet stringent safety protocols, Each batch is then tested to ensure they are compliant with AHPA safety standards.  They are checked for heavy metals, fungus, molds, pesticides, yeast, and bacteria.

And finally, no fillers, artificial flavors or colors, or preservatives of any kind are added to any of their herbal products.

Are the herbs raw? Are they sterilized? Organic India preserves their herbs as close to their natural state as possible. The herbs are heated just high enough for sterilization, so they can no longer be considered raw. They use a nonchemical sterilization process to clean the herbs and get rid of any possible harmful pathogens.

Are all of the products 3rd party tested? Yes. Each batch is tested thoroughly for contaminants. Also, botanical ingredient integrity testing is done to ensure the potency of the herbs.

What are the capsules made of?  Pullulan. This a natural mushroom biopolymer. Pullulan is created by extracting water from the mushroom that is grown organically on a tapioca starch substrate.

Pullulan also creates an oxygen barrier which in turn prolongs the product’s shelf life. This also protects it from oxidation.

What should I do if I have a negative reaction to a herbal remedy? Stop using it right away and contact your medical health professional.

You can contact a medical safety team, that works with Organic India, if you like. 1-888-550-8332 x6 with any questions or concerns you may have.

Are Organic India’s products safe to use during pregnancy? Always consult with a physician before taking any supplements.

About Banyan Botanicals Triphala

  • Triphala translates into three fruits in Sanskrit (ancient Indian language). Made from the highest ORGANIC TRIPHALA POWER. This traditional formula helps clean your intestinal tract, maintain regularity, and promotes healthy digestion. It also works as a colon cleanse… but gentle on your system. You won’t have to stay close to your bathroom as you would with a more common colon cleanse.
  • Use TRIPHALA every day. You may notice a change within a day or it may take up to 4 to 6 weeks. Please allow time for it to work itself into your tissues to do its work. You can start with a small dose and work to larger quantities if needed.
  • The powdered form is the most traditional way to take this formulation. Triphala has a bitter taste, so take the capsules if you don’t want to mess around making the powder more palatable (adding something sweet to the mix). However, in India, the taste is considered by Ayurvedic medicine to be an essential part of the process. This starts your digestive process and signals your body to start its own internal pharmacy.
  • BANYAN BOTANICALS is dedicated to producing the highest quality AYURVEDIC products. They only use USDA certified organic herbs. They practice fair trade. All the products are 3rd party tested to ensure product quality and your safety.

Final Thoughts

Triphala is a cheap and effective way to build immune system support. It would be a difficult task to import these 3 superfruits and try to make your own formula. Amla is a SUPERSTAR antioxidant, but a special magic occurs when these three fruits come together in unison. It is the most popular AYURVEDIC FORMULATION going back a thousand years. India has a long and rich history and has always been on top of their game when it comes to the human condition.

If you are serious about your health, give TRIPHALA a try. Thanks for reading.

Many Blessings, Brian.

I am in no way stating that Triphala will cure any conditions or diseases. The human body is finicky. What helps one person, may not work as well with others. The numbers are on the side of Triphala’s effectiveness in helping people improve various areas of health.

My immune system is solid, but I also consume a lot of Klamath Blue-green algae. What I can verify… since I have been taking Triphala, my digestive tract moves really smoothly. It runs so easily and smoothly. I can attest to this. This is what it’s known for in India. I have regular and smooth movements of my number 2 every day (not everyone likes to talk about that, right!). This is what I can verify for myself. Constipation does plague a lot of people.  Proper digestion is so important for maintaining optimal health!

Have a good one.

TRIPHALA RESEARCH

Is Blueberry a Fruit that offers Immune System Support?

Blueberry is a popular flavor in the United States. Blueberry pancakes are magnificent. Muffins loaded with blueberries are common in my country… as well as cobbler or pie. But, is blueberry a fruit that offers immune system support?

Most of the blueberries picked each season end up in your produce aisle at your local supermarket. But, each year blueberries are becoming more popular in a processed form.

Blueberries are considered a SUPERFOOD!  They are jam-packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and ANTIOXIDANTS!

Antioxidants are linked with reducing risks of heart disease, cancer, and other inflammatory disorders. They have also been proven effective in treating immune system disorders as well as digestive issues.

mmm… yummy

By the way… What are Blueberries?

Blueberries are small bluish or purple fruits that grow on flowering shrubs. The fruit grows in clusters.  They are native to North America and are cultivated as well as grow wild. They are most often grown in northern states as well as Canada. The highbush variety was introduced to Europe in the 1930s.

Blueberries only exhibit their exotic color on the outside. The skin is the only part of the blueberry possessing this natural dye. If you are not careful when eating blueberries, you could end up with a permanent stain on your clothes.  The skin is loaded with anthocyanins. These are naturally produced pigments that get their color depending on the amount of the acidity level of the pigment.

How Can Blueberries Boost Your Immune System?

Blueberries have a reputation for boosting your immune system. The Year 2020 certainly has gotten the attention of many people around the globe when it comes to immune system health. Whether you are worried about the virus or not, most of us have taken noticed what could happen to you if you have a compromised immune system.

Now, these little ole’ berries are chocked full of antioxidants. Blueberries are on the top of the list of many antioxidant charts, but a little known fruit from india, Amla, is packed with way more antioxidants. However, blueberries have a considerably higher number of antioxidants than just about any other natural food.

Antioxidants are molecules that fight off aggressive free radical scavengers. Free radicals in small amounts are actually beneficial for your immune system. Your body’s immune cells use free radicals to fight off infections.

It is necessary to have inflammation after an injury.  Free radicals released from inflamed cells are essential for the regeneration of tissue.  Having the right balance of antioxidants and free radicals are important for maintaining overall health.

To keep free radicals under control, you need to consume more antioxidant-rich foods. If your body is overrun by free radicals, oxidative stress sets in.  This oxidation can damage your DNA and lead to cell death. Cancerous cells may develop as a result.

WHAT CAUSES OXIDATIVE STRESS? Environmental toxins like air pollution or inhaling toxic chemicals from a job site… Addictive behavior such as cigarette smoking or excessive drinking of alcoholic beverages… Radiation exposure as in tanning beds… Out of control blood sugar levels… Overdoing exercise (damaging tissues)… Too much vitamin C or vitamin E or… Too much copper, zinc, magnesium, or iron (you can actually overdo essential nutrients!).

Balance is the key to optimum health. Too much or too little oxygen is even worse for you.  Having a ph balance is also extremely important. Just keep in mind to take it easy and be careful of addictive behavior.

Are Blueberries the Key to the Fountain of Youth?

Well.  I doubt that you will ever find the fountain of youth… but, it is true that eating the right kind of foods (and avoiding other food groups) help slow your body’s aging process. Poor food choices lead to an early death.  This should be common knowledge.  BUT, many people love staying in DENIAL.  It is comfortable and convenient.

Fighting back oxidative stress is one of the most important things to do if you want to fight back the effects of aging. So, whatever works well for your immune system carries forward with staying young.  Healthy cells are everything.  When your organs fail, you can bet there is a problem within the cells of that particular organ.

So, the bottom line… consume foods high in antioxidants help keep Father Time at bay for a little while longer. Antioxidants help keeps cells healthy and aids in their regeneration.  Blueberries are a superfruit that will help you get there.

Stay home Father Time… I am not ready for you yet!

Does Cancer Still Scare You to Death?

I don’t spend my days worrying about cancer.  I watched my dad whither away with lung cancer. I never developed a passion for cigarettes… thank GOD! I am somewhat vain and am more concerned about aging. I am 57 and doing pretty good at looking and feeling youthful.

I spend a great deal of time and research searching for the best ways to maintain optimum health.  I had a period of my life when I let myself go when I started suffering from chronic pain.  It turns out it was sciatica. I have been successful at keeping this in remission. The internet is the greatest TOOL ever for finding answers to problems. I just wish ego would step aside and actual facts could be presented to the general populous and lives could be enriched. But, in the meantime, you can sort through abundant sources of info to find solutions.  Once you are able to network into the right resources, you are home free.

There are food choices you can make to turn your health around (if you heading towards ill health), or if you want to obtain optimum performance in sports. You can increase your chances of avoiding degenerative diseases by paying close attention to what you put into your body. We, as a society, eat foods without looking at the ingredients. You have no idea what restaurants are even putting in your food. I’m not trying to preach here.  I am just trying to get people to at least think about what they are consuming.

Blueberries are not a cure for cancer, but they are one of the better food choices for maintaining healthy cellular health with their potent antioxidant power from phytonutrients.. As well as antioxidants, blueberries are high in vitamin C and vitamin A.

Research has shown antioxidants slowing down numerous cancers. You should proceed with caution in taking antioxidant supplements.  They could have a negative impact on tumors. It would be wise to stick with whole foods to obtain your antioxidants.

Something magic happens in nature.  Eating whole foods, rather than scientifically altered supplements, are your best bet in achieving optimal health.  Powdered forms are fine if they are not heated up during the manufacturing process (heat alters the chemical structure of pretty much everything).

Blueberries also contain vitamin B9… folate or folic acid.  This powerful B vitamin plays a role in DNA synthesis and repair. This is helpful in cancer prevention since cancer is a result of a mutation in the DNA and cells.

Eat Your Heart Out! as long as it is Blueberries.

A few years ago I was really SCARED. I was having chest pains. One night I decided to head to the local VA and had myself checked out. I was already aware that my blood pressure would get too high during certain activities like hiking steep hills. Anyway, I had all these tests done to try to locate the source of my pain.

I have always felt fortunate in being able to use my veteran’s medical benefits otherwise these tests would have cost me a pretty penny! After undergoing all of these tests, the end result was, my heart was functioning well. I asked the doctors if it was muscular pain.  I then figured it must have been an injury caused by overdoing resistance band workouts or karate. The doctor agreed that I may have torn a muscle.

Any way, the pain came back 6 months ago.  I had been on a plant-based diet for a whole year at this point, and my blood pressure had returned to normal. I googled sternum pain... I just love the internet.  I found out I had Costochondritis.  This was the cause of my chest pain and required a specially made device from New Zealand to push my ribs back into place.

My point.  Chest pain scared the bejesus out of me.  A heart attack sounds like a really bad way to go. I will do anything healthwise to avoid cardiovascular disease.

Eating blueberries may help you lower your blood pressure. The anti-inflammatory effects of blueberries help make your arterial walls more flexible so your blood can move more smoothly through your body. Blueberries will also help you lower your LDL cholesterol which also plays a role in heart disease.

The nutritional components of blueberries support heart health. It contains fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B6, folate and phytonutrients  Fiber helps reduce the amount of cholesterol flowing through your bloodstream. Vitamin B6 and folate help prevent homocysteine buildup. (an amino acid from eating meat). Too much homocysteine may lead to heart disease.

Certain minerals can help you lower blood pressure if consumed on a regular basis. Calcium, potassium, and magnesium. Blueberries provide these minerals.

I start my day off with a bowl of fruit.  I usually have bananas, dates, and blueberries in the mix. I am also diabetic and believe it or not fruit does not raise my blood sugar to out of control levels. This is only because I am on a plant-based diet with very little plant-based fats. My blood pressure is now in the normal range and was high before I changed the way I eat.

Are Blueberries Good for Digestion and Weight Loss?

Losing weight is actually quite simple.  I tried every fad diet available for years and bought too many so-called-weight-loss-pills. Hard to follow diets worked for a moment.  I actually had success with food combining (Fit-for-Life) when I was young. But when I tried it later on in life, when I was becoming OBESE, it didn’t seem to have its magic anymore.  My metabolism was different at 26 years of age. In my late thirties, it just didn’t work.

The Paleo diet worked some, but I plateaued. My bloodwork also was horrendous.  This way of eating is the express lane to a heart attack.  It also made my diabetes worse.  At first, it lowered my sugars… that is why I started the diet in the first place.  To be honest, I had to add more meat to my diet, because their recommendations left me ravenous.  I was always hungry.

After receiving my bloodwork about 19 months ago, I felt hopeless. My health was getting worse. I was scared to say the least. I am not easily defeated by life. I have made many turnarounds from hopeless situations. Fortunately, I came across a website that changed my life… or at least my health.

This leads me to where I am today. I am not worried about Covid.  My immune system is strong.  I put this blog together to share my journey and my dedication towards research so I may offer hope to others.

My diet changed that day in the doctor’s office, and I have not looked back. The secret to a better you (health and physical appearance) is through the plant kingdom. Most people don’t care to listen to this, but some will. If your health is failing and you are overweight, a whole-food plant-based diet will change your life.

Weight loss is so easy this way.  Just go to youtube and look up plant-based eating. You will find a plethora of testimonials to back this up.  There are also many smart and wise doctors getting on board.

Your digestion will improve drastically when you eat plants loaded with fiber. It is always best to eat the whole food to get your nutrients. Blueberries are loaded with fiber to help in your digestion. They support healthy gut function, digestion, and better bowel movements. Nutrients that are present in blueberries will help keep the natural bacteria in your stomach thriving and healthy.

Blueberries are full of water and will help you stay full.  You won’t notice this right away because you may be used to eating heavier.  It seems when I start with some raw nutrient-rich foods, it takes less starchy foods to fill me up. When I just eat starchy foods alone, I tend to overeat.

Is Eating Blueberries the SMART Thing to do?

Blueberries are wonderful for brain function and improving memory. Antioxidants do you a solid again and help reduce harmful oxidation on your brain. As we all know, when we age, brain function and memory begin to decline. Flooding your body with antioxidant potent foods is the SMART thing to do.

Blueberries may help you keep your brain operating at youthful levels and may even improve your memory function. Blueberries’ anti-inflammatory properties allow for better blood flow to your brain.

Mental-health population-based studies have been able to demonstrate that blueberries have been effective in slowing cognitive decline in older women (look in resources below). Another study shows blueberries as helping to prevent neurodegenerative diseases. Blueberries are definitely certifiable brain food!

Should Diabetics Eat Blueberries?

ABSOLUTELY!  I briefly explained earlier in this post my experience in fruit consumption as a diabetic. If you keep fat out of your bloodstream, you can gobble all the carbohydrates you want.  This includes fruit. You really can on a plant-based diet.

However, if you choose to eat the Great American diet (or any Western-style diet), blueberries are on the ok-to-eat list for diabetics… in small amounts.  They contain less sugar than other fruits… as most berries.  But, if you eat my way, you can gorge on fruit.

If you add sugar to your diet, make sure it is encased in fruit.  Since fruit is packed with fiber, your body will absorb natural sugars inside fruit without horrendous spiking. There is something magical when you consume whole foods in raw form the way nature intended.

Chemicals (anthocyanins) found in blueberries may help you with insulin sensitivity and your glucose metabolism. The key to treating diabetes lies in treating insulin sensitivity.  If you don’t, carbs will raise your blood sugar.

Are Wild Blueberries Better than Cultivated?

Wild Blueberries are smaller. They have double the antioxidant capacity of cultivated blueberries.  Wild blueberries vary in color.  They have different shades of blue to an almost black in color. They can also vary in taste… from extremely sweet to a more tart flavor.

Grown in harsh environments (Maine and Canada), wild blueberries have adapted to their condition by developing more anthocyanins (antioxidant). This is why wild blueberries are better in taste and nutrition.

Cultivated blueberries are more homogeneous in size, taste and color. Cultivate berries may be genetically engineered (GMO). Cultivated blueberries are easier to harvest since you can plan how they are planted and grown. You can get machinery to harvest the crop. Wild blueberries depend on hand harvesting. So if you are trying to make a profit, cultivating blueberries would probably be your best choice.

Picking fresh blueberries

Are blueberries stil healthy when cooked?

Once you go over 350 degrees Fahrenheit, you will start losing the potency of the antioxidants. Microwaves and overboiling cause the most loss of nutritional value… don’t get me started on how I feel about microwaves!

Cooked berries also leach out vitamin C. However, the levels of niacin, thiamine, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, Vitamin A, and carotene are similar to their natural form. Cooking seems to increase the amounts of riboflavin and vitamin E. Calcium, potassium, and phosphorus become more absorbable when heated. Cooking also DOUBLES the amount of calcium, zinc and magnesium are essentially the same cooked as raw.

What is the Difference Between Blueberry and Bilberry?

Bilberry is a European relative to the American blueberry. Bilberries actually have more anthocyanins.  This is the source of the antioxidant power of blueberries, The taste of wild blueberries and bilberries are similar, however; cultivated blueberries have a different taste. Bilberries are easy to find in Europe… not so much in North America.

Final Thoughts

What do you like about blueberries? Blueberry pancakes are my favorite as well as blueberry pie. Yummy! I eat blueberries a lot in my morning fruit bowl They can be a little mushy at times.  Depends. They are not overly sweet and are better (in my opinion) mixed with other fruits.

It is good to know that you can still reap nutritional benefits from cooked blueberries. I have to be careful of the added sugars in baked goods, but I am sure I kind find a healthier way to bake blueberries. There is a ton of info online on various ways to eat blueberries.  Have fun. Thanks for reading.

Many blessings, Brian.

What is Turmeric Root?

Turmeric root

What is Turmeric Root?  Most people are familiar with curry powder.  Curries are very popular in Indian, Thai, Cambodian, and Chinese cuisine.  The main ingredient in yellow curries is Turmeric.  If you have ever used this colorful spice at home, you will quickly find out that it can stain your plate ware. It can be quite tricky to remove those stains.

Some say turmeric is the most powerful of all the spices. It has been used to treat every household ailment in India. Its incredible healing powers are numerous. It is an antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-inflammatory. Wow! With all that going on, maybe you should add it to your diet.

Turmeric is also used as a Dye. The golden yellow color is due to curcumin.  Dye made out of turmeric isn’t the greatest of dyes, but it is often used to color traditional Indian dresses (Saris) and it is the base color used in the robes of Buddhist monks.

What is the History of Turmeric?

The turmeric plant originates from South Asia. It has been used for medicinal purposes for 4000 years in India. There it has primarily been used as a spice (it is the main ingredient in many curries).  In India, turmeric powder is seen as a symbol of purity, fertility, and prosperity and, it is used in Indian rites and rituals. Because of its intense bright color, turmeric has been called “Indian Saffron”.

Turmeric more than likely reached China around 700 A.D. Shortly thereafter, it reached East Africa. It found its way to the New World (Jamaica) in the 18th century.  Marco Polo was dazzled by the spice and added it to his famous trade route, The Silk Road,  in the thirteenth century.

Turmeric also found its way into Polynesian hands.  Evidence of turmeric was found in Tahiti, Hawaii, and Easter Island before European contact was made in these locations.

What are the Benefits of Turmeric?

Anti-inflammatory Relief

You could have fooled me! Inflammation is important? Well, it’s a vital part of your immune system response. It behaves like a warrior… ready to go to battle with viruses and bacteria… or germs wanting to wreak havoc in your body.  Inflammation also helps heal and repair damaged tissue.

If you didn’t have inflammation, dangerous pathogens like bacteria would take control of your body and possibly kill you. Now, I am talking about acute-short term inflammation here. This is beneficial in maintaining optimal health. inflammation becomes a huge problem when it becomes chronic.

Many scientists believe that chronic inflammation is involved with most ailments in our current times. Instead of helping your tissues, it becomes like an out of control pit bull and begins to tear your body down.  Now, I have met a lot of nice pit bulls in my life, but I choose to avoid the damaging ones… just as I like to keep my inflammation at bay.

So, the bottom line is, anything that helps control inflammation is a friend of mine.  At one point of my life, I suffered from sciatica.  I decided to use a turmeric and curcumin supplement near the end of that ordeal (along with physical therapy), and my sciatica problem went into remission. The spinal area in your lower back gets inflamed horrendously with sciatica.  It is a living nightmare.  I do believe the curcumin supplement helped lower the swelling in my lower back and aided in my recovery.

Research has shown that curcumin aids your body in reducing inflammation by lowering your body’s histamine levels and boosting the amount of cortisone which is produced by your adrenal glands.  This special turmeric compound has been a blessing in treating chronic arthritis. It has also been beneficial in lessening pain and fatigue.

Help with Arthritis

Arthritis is a common ailment in western countries.  Imagine that.  With our compromised cuisine. There are over 100 different types of arthritis… inflammatory arthritis is the type that you may benefit from by adding turmeric to your diet. This type of arthritis causes inflammation of your joints, so it makes sense to treat the cause instead of the condition.  Getting the swelling down should be a primary concern.  You may want to revisit the type of foods that you are consuming and find out which ones tend to cause inflammation.

They published a study back in 2012 demonstrating that curcumin is a compelling anti-inflammatory compound. It was proven to be more effective than an anti-inflammatory drug used in this test. (study located in resources). It makes good sense to give it a try if you suffer from any kind of inflammation.

It’s a Powerful Antioxidant

Along with chronic inflammation, Oxidative damage is another dirty rotten scoundrel behind the scenes of many diseases. You may have heard the term free radical. These are highly reactive molecules with unpaired electrons.  Basically… your cells are damaged.  CANCER is a collection of damaged cells.  NO BUENO.

Antioxidants are so IMPORTANT!  They help protect your body from harmful free radical scavengers.  Turmeric has powerful antioxidant properties that will fight the good fight against these devils.  Curcumin also may amp up the activity of your own body’s antioxidant enzymes. So, you can double dip with curcumin… stop free radicals before they cause damage… charge up your own body’s defense mechanisms!

Heart disease is the world’s #1 cause of death

It is common knowledge that heart disease is the number one killer in the world.  Like many man-made afflictions, poor diet choices play a huge role.  Sure, some people have drawn the short straw when it comes to having a healthy heart.  I knew a little girl when I was a child, that had a hole in her heart… her lips were even blue… she bravely trudged through life.  That was a long time ago, and medicine was not yet advanced enough.

For the rest of us born with normal hearts, we should all show more love to our hearts. As a society, we just don’t.  We get caught up in the moment and eat whatever is sitting in front of us. Things are way more out of control than when I was a kid 45 years ago. Portion sizes have skyrocketed… Belt sizes have ballooned… Food has been poisoned with who knows what…  Food is not really even “food” half the time.

Anyway.  Nature has the answer. She always does. Eating food created in nature… eating as nature intended. Turmeric contains properties that can help reverse heart disease Curcumin can help improve the function of the endothelium (this is the lining of your blood vessels).

Endothelial dysfunction has nothing to do with clogged arteries (which is what most people associate with heart disease). The large blood vessels on your heart constrict instead of dilating.  This condition, oddly enough, favors women over men.

Curcumin also reduces the amount of inflammation and oxidation in your body (as discussed above). Inflammation and oxidation negatively affect heart disease as well and every other organ in your body.

Anti-cancer help?

Cancer used to scare me to death.  To this day, I remember a teacher instilling this fear in me.  Back in the seventies, it was a death sentence.  It sill can be. My dad died of lung cancer in 1999.  I despise cigarettes by the way. I watched him slowly wither away to the nastiness that is cancer.

Science has come far since those early days of my childhood. I don’t think about cancer so much.  I eat extremely healthy these days… I make sure there are no chemicals in my food and I have been into herbal remedies for decades now.

Cancer is a disease of damaged cells, of course. I suppose most people have a basic understanding of this. Certain cancers are more treatable than others, and not all cancers are caused by environmental toxins or poor dietary habits.  I used to work for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital as a fundraiser and childhood cancer is the result of DNA changes early in a child’s life or even before they are born… some are the result of genes.

There are some steps you can take if you develop cancer. Curcumin from turmeric is one of the many options you can take to fight cancer. If you are undergoing radiation therapy, sometimes new cancers may develop.  Curcumin can help prevent these new cancers from forming. It can also slow down the generation of existing cancer cells and may help prohibit tumor growth.

Studies have demonstrated that curcumin can play a role in the death of cancer cells and help limit the number of blood vessels growing in tumors.  It can also help slow down the spread of cancer. Various studies point out that curcumin can reduce the growth of cancer cells in a laboratory setting and stop the growth of tumors in test animals.

You don’t have to wait for a cancer diagnosis before adding turmeric or a curcumin supplement to your daily routine. Evidence shows curcumin can help prevent cancer from developing in the first place. There may come a day when curcumin is used alongside conventional cancer treatment. Too early to say, but it looks promising!

Digestive Aid?

Turmeric has been used in India for thousands of years to add flavor to food. Curry is extremely popular in South Asian cuisine. Besides spicing up food, turmeric has an added benefit… it can help you digest your meal better. It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for hundreds (if not thousands) of years as a digestive aid.

The curcumin properties in turmeric help support your gall bladder, stomach, and kidneys. Modern Western medicine is now beginning to explore how turmeric can help with gut inflammation and as a possible treatment for irritable bowel syndrome.

Are you Depressed?

Big pharma has reaped the rewards of an increasing number of depressed people in recent times. Depression has been in the media’s spotlight since The Prozac Nation became a staple on many best selling books lists. Doctors in these stressful times are quick to write scripts for anti-depressants.

I developed chronic pain back in 1997.  My life took a quick nose dive. I went through years of uncertainty and dismay. I visited doctor after doctor and could find no answers to what was causing my pain.  Years later when the pain came back, I discovered the cause and was able to use physical therapy to get on top of… sciatica.

So… back then, they could not figure it out.  It baffles me. This is a common condition. It could be that forces beyond our material world set up the dynamics for me to learn a spiritual lesson. But… the doctors at the VA threw in the towel and sent me to a shrink.

All the psychiatrists wanted to do was prescribe me anti-depressants.  I was upset with my situation, for sure, but I never have struggled with depression. I messed around with some supplements and eventually, the pain went bye-bye… at least for the time being.

In comes 2011 and I hurt my back and found myself in a world of pain again. I went back to the same doctor and she again kept saying I was depressed.  I simply refused to take her diagnosis. I actually have suffered from anxiety for years and tried to get her to agree to that.  It was always about taking anti-depressants with her.  She never really tried to get me to talk about anything on a deeper level.

I truly believe some people need anti-depressants, but sometimes all you need is the right kind of nutrients to feed your brain.  There is something lacking in our modern diets. I recommend consuming algae from Klamath Lake first thing in the morning.  There are some components within the algae from this lake that will place your mind in a pleasant state of being.

I know for a fact that certain foods can alter your brain chemistry. Curcumin has been tested in clinical trials along with fluoxetine (Prozac). The study showed curcumin as being as effective as Prozac… but with fewer side-effects (since it is natural).

Depression has also been tied in with reduced levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDFN). This is a protein in the brain that promotes the survival of your nerve cells by encouraging growth, maturation, and maintenance of these cells. Curcumin helps boost BDNF levels.  There are also some indications that curcumin may help foster brain neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin.

Meditation is also helpful in combating depression

Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s disease evokes a lot of fear in some people.  The thought of losing your sense of self can be terrifying.  The onset must be the most horrendous part… knowing that you are starting to lose your mind… and the impact on your family.

I could imagine it would be like some kind of nightmare when it is gone full-throttle. No one really could know. Could they? How would you tap into their mindset?  It must be like a ghost trapped in between worlds.  In reality, Alzheimer’s patients must be caught in some kind of strange existence.

I keep my brain busy. Writing is very helpful in keeping your brain neurons firing off… or learn a new language.  It is important to keep your brain active.  There are also brain-boosting foods available for consumption.  I just mentioned how turmeric helps with depression by boosting it with neurotransmitters. Your brain needs nutrients to keep going.  To keep you sharp and alert.

Science has yet to discover any effective treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease.  What you can do is treat yourself to some brain-boosting foods and eat foods loaded with antioxidants. Curcumin has shown the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, so it can feed nutrients to your brain. Those two scoundrels, inflammation and oxidation, are linked to Alzheimer’s. This post has already pointed out how turmeric does the body good combating inflammation and oxidation.

What is the difference between turmeric and curcumin?

Turmeric root is part of the turmeric plant as it appears in nature. It is a spice and most often seen in the market place as a ground powder.  Curcumin is a supercharged chemical in turmeric.  It is what offers turmeric its reputation as a superfood. Extracts are made with a higher dose of curcumin than from the root itself, but it’s not always easy to trick Mother Nature.

There is something special about receiving curcumin within the whole food.  It is easier to absorb nutrients from whole foods than from a supplement form.  When Black pepper is taken alongside curcumin (or inside a formulation) enable the compound to assimilate into your body easier.

About Curcumin

CURCUMIN is a yellow pigment and the primary bioactive compound found in turmeric.  It is a micronutrient with anti-inflammatory properties and has the ability to increase the number of antioxidants your body produces.

Supplements have been created with extracted curcumin to provide a stronger dose than found in turmeric. But trying to cheat nature doesn’t always work as well. Curcumin on its own is not easily digestible.  However, adding black pepper to curcumin may increase its absorption by 2000%.

Scientists fool around with many formulations to create better bioavailability, but in the long run, you will benefit more by choosing to go with whole foods… turmeric in the way nature intended. Your body will always be able to digest and absorb nutrients way better this way.

Curcumin Supplement

Is Curry Powder and Turmeric the same Thing?

Curry is always a blend of different spices. Turmeric is what gives yellow curries its yellowish color. There also Asian curries that do not include turmeric. Red and green curries are popular in Thai cuisine. Coconut milk is usually added to these curries to give it a delicious sweet flavor with a little sting from chili paste. Thai curries are my favorite curry dishes.

Curry with turmeric often also contains spices such as cumin, fenugreek, and coriander. Ground chile peppers are usually added to the mix.  Other popular added spices are cloves, caraway, cinnamon, ginger, garlic, fennel seed, mustard seed,  cardamom, nutmeg, and black pepper.  You see, it is a hodgepodge of ingredients.

And by the way… turmeric is just turmeric!

Is turmeric safe?

  • turmeric may limit your iron intake if you have an iron deficiency
  • it may lower your blood sugar to low.  Diabetics should keep an eye on their blood sugar levels
  • turmeric may interact with blood-thinning medication
  • turmeric is high in oxalate. The oxalate could combine with calcium and cause kidney stones.
  • too much can lead to headaches, nausea, and diarrhea.

Turmeric or its potent compound curcumin is another great gift from nature to help you build a stronger immune system.  You may or may not like the flavor of turmeric or curry.  You could always find turmeric or curcumin in capsule form.  You can also add turmeric powder to a blended power drink.  I mix numerous powders to make my own natural energy drink. I do this every day.  It is a quick way to load your body up with nutrients.

The benefits of Eating Raw Garlic Daily

What are the benefits of eating raw garlic daily? Garlic has a whole lot more going for it than adding flavor to your favorite dishes. It has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years.

Garlic boosts your immune system, so you can combat cold and flu season. Raw garlic is full of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B6, manganese, selenium, vitamin C, iron, potassium, and copper. This combination helps tame the harsh effects of colds and flu.

Find a creative way to add 2 to 3 cloves of garlic a day for powerful immune system support. Keep a garlic press on hand and mince some fresh garlic into your daily meals. It also adds zest to your plate. Raw is always better than cooked, but if you must add garlic while sauteing your food. You can also make garlic tea with a bit of honey or ginger for added flavor.

Garlic tea will help loosen up blocked sinus passages and strengthen your immune system against the next time you are assaulted by viruses and germs. Garlic can also be added to stews, soups, and broths to ward off sinus infections.

One of the earliest uses of garlic in India was when consuming meat. They believed meat could cause infections and that by adding garlic, the meat-eaters could fight off the infection. Laborers commonly used garlic in case they were exposed to infections in disease-friendly environments.

Digestive Helper. Many health problems begin in your gut. Anytime I have a cold or sinus infection starting, I notice a pain in my stomach. My first thought is to blame it on something I ate. After a while… I realize I am coming down with something, so staying on top of digestive health is important. The faster you clear unwanted rotten waste… the better.

A lot of foods will aid your digestion, but garlic is one of the best options out there. Raw garlic aids in reducing inflammation in your digestive tract and enables an easier breakdown of food in your body. There are also antibacterial properties, in garlic, offering your digestive tract an added defense against infections.

Garlic may also help flush out toxins from your intestines. It has been used for thousands of years in treating parasites, dysentery, diarrhea, and colitis. Try using garlic the next time you feel bloated or full of gas.

People usually experience digestive issues some point in their life. There are many reasons… certain reactions to foods eaten, health conditions, and even an overload of stress. Medications are always available for those trusting Big Pharma, but if you would rather go Big Nature… try some raw garlic… or quit eating the foods that put a hurt on you.

If you truly desire to stay in optimal health, retaining a healthy digestive system is a good place to begin. Adding plenty of raw food to your diet is important. Raw foods contain enzymes that aid in digestion. Getting your vitamins and minerals from uncooked food is the optimum way to ensure your body receives is a daily dose of nutrients. Having a compromised digestive system can cause a lot of discomfort and may lead to awkward situations socially… just saying.

The great thing about garlic is its ability to stimulate the production of your gastric juices for the proper processing of your food. It also stimulates your liver to help eliminate toxins. A word of caution… too much garlic may be too much for your digestive system.

Do you heart your heart?     Of course, the health of your heart is important.  It is so easy to get caught up in the ways of the world and all of a sudden like… you start having high blood pressure readings at the doctor’s office.  I would say “I just walked real fast on the way in” or “it must be the caffeine!”. (when they were suggesting blood thinners)  I was unwilling to look in the mirror and see the truth.  Time slips by.  Then your lab reports come back with awful cholesterol numbers.  Hard to hide now!

I was out of control with my food choices.  I was addicted to certain foods and now I was beginning to pay the price.  My blood sugar was also out of control.  This was a wake-up call for me to make some changes in my life.  You see… I was under the illusion of youth. I still look out at the world with the same eyes of my youth and think I can turn everything around any time I want, but I couldn’t until I changed everything about how I ate.

There are many foods out there that are just plain devastating to your health.  Processed foods are doing who knows what to your body.  These manufactured foods are not REAL FOOD!  Think about it! There is a reason diabetes has become an epidemic within the past few decades.  It is no coincidence that an explosion of processed foods and increased cases of diabetes meet on the same timeline.

FAT.  Foods high in fat are also a major culprit of our modern-day health crisis.  FAT is behind heart disease as well as diabetes.  Cooking oil is pure concentrated fat and is backed by zero fiber (which helps your digestive system stay clean and healthy).   FATS clog up your arteries and lead to heart attacks and strokes.  Heart disease is the numero uno killer in the world.  It doesn’t have to be.

There are foods out there that can help make your heart healthier (but you got to stop eating foods that are killing you). Garlic is one of the foods.  Garlic can help you fight against hypertension (high blood pressure) and atherosclerosis (clogged arteries).

A 4-month study presented garlic as having the ability to improve blood lipid profiles, to strengthen blood antioxidant profiles, and induce a reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure.  It also showed decreased levels of oxidation in blood samples and the body (cell damage).  Garlic helps pass the benefits of hydrogen sulfide to your heart.

Researchers feel that your red blood cells transform the sulfur in garlic into hydrogen sulfide gas which can expand blood vessels and making it easier for blood pressure regulation.

More studies need to be done to determine if garlic helps lower cholesterol, but research has found that it can positively impact your arteries and blood pressure.   The German Commission E (sorta like the FDA in America) recommends 4 grams of garlic a day (one large clove)  to lower your risk of heart disease.

So, you see adding a little raw garlic to your diet can enhance your heart health, so it will be better prepared to fight the onset of any disorders or diseases that may affect your heart.

Arginine is also found in garlic. Arginine is a crucial amino acid that provides excellent support for your cardiovascular system. It has the ability to relax your blood vessels and is a key ingredient in most supplements designed to support your heart.

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a severe condition and shouldn’t be tread lightly.  Remember, heart disease is the number one cause of death worldwide.  It is preventable.  You can avoid taking prescriptions if you make the right dietary changes.

If you are already on meds, eating raw garlic may help you bring your blood pressure down a notch so that you require less medication.  Garlic by itself will not control or permanently reduce hypertension, but it can help reduce blood pressure in the long run.  Garlic offers many benefits.  You should add it to your diet every day (even if your heart is fine).

Brain function   Garic contains wonderful antioxidants that help combat free radicals, which will cause oxidative damage if left unchecked. Antioxidant activity can protect your brain from developing dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Organo-sulfur compounds, found in garlic, destroy cells in glioblastomas ( a deadly brain tumor). Garlic compounds (DADS, DAS, and DATS) have demonstrated the ability in eradicating brain cancer cells.

Your brain, as well as your spinal cord, contains immune cells called Microglia.  These immune cells are your first and primary line of defense in your central nervous system.

Your mature brain cells rarely regenerate.  This is not the case with Microglia cells.  They are able to take action when inflammation and environmental stress arise by multiplying.  They can amass and migrate towards any injured site and respond to inflamed areas and offer protection from the destruction of brain cells.

If these microglial cells get out of control, they would produce more nitric oxide than your brain could handle.  This could lead to excess cell damage and promote neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s; however, a compound found in garlic, called FruArg, is able to reduce the amount of nitric oxide created by the microglial cells.

Cancer   Anyone of us could become diagnosed with cancer.  Age doesn’t matter.  Even healthy people are not immune.  Science has become way more effective in dealing with cancer, and lives are saved.  Back when I was a kid in the 70s, cancer was a death sentence.  It scared the bejesus out of me!

Yes, cancer is more treatable now, but we have a long way to go before eradicating it.  Garlic is another gift from nature to help slow down the growth of cancerous cells.  It contains a compound known as allyl sulfur.  Research supports its ability for slowing cancerous growth.  Garlic has been shown to kill cancer cells in test tubes, and studies involving humans have come out with the same outcomes.

Garlic is also a terrific and nutritious way of reducing the risk of cancer.  Raw garlic is always more effective than cooked.

Diabetes   Blood sugar control is vitally important for diabetics. It is a daily challenge for every diabetic in keeping their numbers under control.  There is a lot of conflicting information out there on what to eat. If you have diabetes, it is extremely critical to isolate the foods that cause your blood to spike rapidly… if you care… some people ignore it and just eat whatever is on the menu.  There are consequences if you choose to do so.

In my experience (yes, I’m diabetic), diabetic medication has not proven to be too effective, in my case. It seems to work okay for some people. Shortly after being diagnosed my numbers were heading in the wrong direction. My only hope was in finding out which foods to eat to avoid losing a leg (not even trying to be funny!)

After trying the recommended diet for diabetes (suggested from the mainstream medical profession), my situation was not improving… it was getting worse.  I stumbled upon something completely against the grain of popular thought… I started following a low-fat whole-food plant-based diet.  My A1C started going back down.  I rapidly lost weight.  My energy skyrocketed. I avoid getting the worst effects of a cold (when I get one it is out of my system within 24 hours).

It is important for me to share this, and I will get back to garlic in a sec… I already have a few little tricks up my sleeve for bringing blood sugar down.  Drink a couple of teaspoons of Braggs’s apple cider vinegar.  It works wonders.  Add amla fruit powder to your diet, and I just became aware of an exercise technique to help lower blood sugars instantly.  Google Theresa Tapp (T Tapp) and find her videos on YouTube.  Look for hoe downs.  They take 3 minutes to do.  They are part of the T Tapp method. Her work out techniques are phenomenal, they do a number on your whole body!

Raw garlic can also aid in lowering blood sugars.  Many studies have been done to demonstrate this.  Garlic may help protect you from a condition called cardiomyopathy which is a leading cause of death among diabetics.  Cardiomyopathy is an abnormally thick and enlarged heart.

Teeth and gums  Garlic acts as a superb natural antiviral remedy for sore or swollen gums.  Just add some turmeric to garlic paste and rub it on your gums.  Anytime you chomp on some raw garlic, you should notice a sensation taking place on your gums.  It has a medicinal feel to it.  This is a great way to take care of your gums.

Garlic also has analgesic properties that can help soothe tooth pain.  This may also help keep tooth decay under control, so try applying some to your teeth and gums when sore.  If you want to be brave, you can mince about some garlic cloves and add it to some warm water, then gargle it in your throat for healthy mouthwash.  It will also keep the vampires away! This will also help keep away bacteria from destroying your lovely teeth.

Eye health  When it comes right down to it, many people neglect the health of their eyes.  Eye health is overlooked and taken for granted.  People don’t usually give it much thought…  until there is a PROBLEM.

Unless you’re blessed with poor vision, you probably never even go to an eye doctor for routine exams.  But, many things can inflict your eyes.  Also, there are loads of things you can do to protect your eyes.  Raw garlic for one.  It contains a healthy dose of selenium, quercetin, and vitamin C (all of which are crucial ingredients for solid eye health).

Adding garlic to your daily diet can also give you added protection from infections and inflammation. It can also help you avoid getting a touch of the pink eye and sties.  Just throw some garlic on your plate and you will be less likely have any eye problems.

Allergies  Garlic may reduce airway inflammation. It is excellent for an antiviral or anti-inflammation situation.  Allergy season is no fun for some of us. I live in the Ohio Valley and allergy season hits us hard here.  Pollen is usually the culprit of this seasonal “hay fever”. You may experience some very unpleasant days to come without addressing this issue.

But, hope is not lost.  There are numerous remedies to combat the assault on your senses.  Literally… smell… taste… and sight usually suffer.  Your throat and sinus passages become swollen. When your air passages become swollen from inflammation, you find it harder to breathe.  Garlic contains properties that may help you reduce the swelling, so you can breathe easier again.

Many people purchase garlic supplements during that time of year, but why not be prepared and add some raw garlic to your daily regimen.

Bone health  Bones deteriorate with age and become brittle.  This is primarily caused by not feeding your body the proper amount of nutrients. Osteoporosis may take place in your skeletal structure without addressing this issue. Women are more likely to suffer from osteoporosis, but men get inflicted too.

If this concerns you, adding raw garlic can help you improve your bone health.  Blue-green algae is also loaded with minerals that are essential for bone health and can easily be assimilated into your body.  Also, eat more healthy greens and find a good source of plant protein.  And finally, strength conditioning is also an excellent way of keeping your bones strong. Make a personal commitment to follow a regular workout routine… even if you are doggone tired!

.

Skin and hair    Garlic surprisingly makes a great topical for your skin. It can work wonders on fungal infections due to its antibacterial properties.  Garlic can also be used to treat eczema.  Try some garlic paste the next time you suffer from athlete’s foot.

Garlic can also be used as a preventive against the damaging effects of free radicals.  It can also be used to slow down a reduction of collagen (which ends up in a loss of skin elasticity).  YOU BEGIN TO LOOK OLD!

Acne is the most widespread skin ailment.  It doesn’t just affect teenagers. Adults can suffer too. There are lots of products in the marketplace to treat acne, but they don’t address the cause of the problem.  Use garlic if you prefer a more natural way to treat acne.

Garlic can be applied directly onto your skin or just mix it up with other ingredients to form a facial mask.  You can use raw garlic to cleanse your skin.  It will help remove particles that clog up your pores (the root cause of acne).  As an added benefit, garlic helps knock out bacteria living on your skin.

But, won’t you end up smelling garlicy?  No. It is easy to wash off, and the smell won’t dillydally around once your face is cleansed. Garlic can be applied daily to send acne packing or use it as a preventive.

Did you know you can use garlic as a hair tonic? It is an excellent remedy for thinning hair. Try rubbing some crushed garlic on your scalp or massage it with garlic-infused oil to help prevent hair loss and possibly a reversal.

Libido     Trouble in the bedroom?  Add some raw garlic to your diet!  Garlic may help you get into the mood and may improve your performance. The downside… your breath may need a makeover!

Garlic has a history as an aphrodisiac, and you will see it listed on many sexual enhancement products. If you are looking for something natural try some garlic, ginger, and maca root.  There are many creative ways to introduce garlic into your life.

Detox your body  You may or may not like listening to heavy metal music, but heavy metals can wreak havoc in your body.  You may be ingesting toxic heavy metals all of the time without even knowing it.  These unwanted metals cause a lot of problems.

Mercury, arsenic, and lead are well-known examples.  Most people are aware that our beautiful oceans are tainted with mercury.  Fish ingest mercury and pass it on to you.  Soils can become contaminated with lead or arsenic.  These poisons can end up in the food that is grown in those soils.   This is why is so paramount to test for heavy metal poisoning.  This is also why certain countries have a nasty reputation for pushing their tainted goods into the world market place.

You can straight up die from over toxicity.  It not uncommon for people to die from eating too much fish. Even if it doesn’t kill you, it may be too late to reverse organ damage.  This, in turn, may affect your health for years to come. So, be more aware of what kinds of foods you are eating and where they are being grown. This also includes your water supply.

Now, the next thing you can do is consume foods that help remove heavy metals from your body.  Garlic is full of sulfur compounds that may help your body when you absorb heavy metals or help you break down heavy metals. It can help deter the buildup of toxins and protect your vital organs.  Consuming garlic daily is a wise thing to do.

Liver support   Garlic contains alliin.  This is a sulfur compound that converts to allicin when chopped, sliced, or diced (or minced for that matter). Allicin is a very capable antioxidant, antibiotic, anti-fungal substance. It offers copious amounts of benefits towards liver health. Chopping garlic releases more of the sulfur compounds to help boost its effectiveness,

Garlic also contains selenium which is a mineral that helps detoxify your liver.  It has also been shown the capability to mobilize liver enzymes to help your body flush out nasty toxins.

Your liver makes a certain type of cholesterol very-low-density-lipoprotein (VLDL).  VLDL expedites the movement of fats into the bloodstream.  VLDL plays a critical role in the metabolism of fat and energy. With that being said, high levels of VLDL along with other cholesterols can put a hurt on your liver and increase your risk for heart disease.  Adding garlic may help balance out these fats.  A study was done in 2002 that was published in the “Journal of Nutrition” demonstrated that using garlic daily reduces elevated VLDL and triglyceride fats in the liver.

When your liver is in its natural healthy state, it is designed to break down toxins, both natural and ingested. Bilirubin is a natural toxin created when part of your red blood cells break down.  Too much bilirubin can lead to hepatitis in your liver. You can also damage your liver from too much acetaminophen (Tylenol).  A 2009 study published in the “Internet Journal of Nutrition and Wellness” was able to show that garlic reversed oxidative stress that was causing liver toxicity in mice

Raw garlic is crowded with amino acids and proteins with antioxidant compounds that may be able to protect your liver from natural and environmental toxins. So, if you want your liver to run smoothly and efficiently, consume about 4 cloves of raw garlic every day

.

anti-inflammatory   Garlic is another one of nature’s gifts that works as an anti-inflammatory. It may help inhibit swelling and inflammation in your body. Your body can suffer from inflammation internally without you knowing about it. Certain foods like dairy create inflammation.  This could eventually cause damage within your cells, tissues, and organs.

Swelling and inflammation can disappear in due time from injuries or burns.  Your body’s natural healing mechanism is amazing,  but if what you are consuming on a daily basis stays the same, the inflammation will only sick around or get worse. Garlic can be used as a preventative or to help you speed up recovery after an injury, infection, or illness.

Arthritis
is a very painful condition caused by inflammation and swelling of your joints. Consuming foods and supplements that contain anti-inflammatory properties offers some relief from arthritic discomfort. Garlic contains diallyl disulfide which is a compound that may curtail cartilage damaging enzymes.  You should also add turmeric to your diet as well do combat arthritis.

History of Garlic

Garlic grows wild in many parts of the world. It has been consumed all over the world for thousands of years. There is evidence that is was used in ancient Egypt 5000 years ago after finding trace evidence in the Giza Plateau, but the origins of garlic are often debated, however, it is believed to originate from central Asia, South Asia, or southwestern Siberia. Garlic is one of the world’s oldest cultivated crops

Ancient Greeks were also fond of garlic. An explosion of knowledge and culture suddenly came to be in a small European country 500 years before the common era (BCE). A period in time that gave us Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates. On of these legendary Greeks was Hippocrates. He is considered to be the father of Western medicine.

Hippocrates prescribed garlic for a wide range of conditions and illnesses. He promoted its use for treating respiratory problems, and as a digestive aid, to fight back fatigue and treat parasitic infestations.

Garlic just well have been the world’s first sports enhancement supplements. The original Olympic athletes, straight out of Athens in ancient Greece, were given garlic to boost their performance and athletic abilities.

.In the ancient world, garlic spread out from Egypt through the Indus Valley (India) all the way to an impressive ancient Chinese civilization. As you may know, garlic is used in many Chineses dishes as well as Italian cooking.

Back in ancient India, garlic was viewed as an aphrodisiac and was exalted for its therapeutic properties. Many of the elites in ancient India shunned from using garlic seeing it as unworthy due to its strong odor. Monks, widows, and children also shied away from garlic because of its stimulant effects.

Throughout history in the Middle East, Nepal, and East Asia, garlic has been used to treat numerous disorders such as TB, Bronchitis, liver disorders, intestinal worms, hypertension, dysentery, and rheumatism.

Can garlic be harmful to some people?

Garlic is related to onions, shallots, and leeks.  It is a food source.  Yes, some people are allergic to these foods. However, It is rare.  Now, if you slam down too much garlic, it may upset your stomach.  You may start belching, and of course, have smelly breath.  You may experience heartburn or even gas.  I have not experienced the latter personally.

If you take blood-thinning medications for blood pressure control, garlic may up the risk for excessive bleeding.  And, by any chance you are prescribed HIV medication, these type of drugs have a negative interaction with garlic

Suggestions for adding garlic to your diet

Fitting raw garlic can be a challenging task.  It has an abrasive flavor not unlike eating raw horseradish. It may even cause a burning sensation, so take it easy.  You can try mincing some up and mixing it up in your dinner.  If you spread it out, you won’t be smacked in the face with too much in one bite.  It actually has a pleasant feel on your gums.  Sorta a medicinal quality.

A quicker way is to swallow some real quick-like.  But, if you don’t chop it up, the optimal effects will not occur.  I personally blend it with raw honey, ginger, maca, amla powder, filtered water, and some fruit.  This is pretty much a superpowered energy drink.

conclusion

There are many natural whole foods offering many beneficial effects on your health.  Eat as many whole foods as you can.  My health has turned around completely and now I am throwing garlic into the mix.  I also use ginger on a daily basis.  Invest in a ninja-style blender if you are serious about optimal health.

I know garlic can be a little harsh, but it does the body good.  I like the flavor when cooked in soups. You still benefit from cooked garlic.  See what you can do to add it foods you like.  Top it on some pizza.  Make a garlic butter and spread it on toast.  There are many ways you can use it.

many blessings… Brian

What is Amla Fruit? My Top Amla Picks.

What is Amla Fruit? Amla, sometimes called Indian Gooseberry, is a fruit found growing in the subcontinent of India. It has been used in traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda) for millennia. It is a very popular digestive aid in India. There is an expansive list of benefits that you can find out about one of my earlier posts. To read more about amla berry click here. If you are already familiar with amla and want to find out where you can purchase this wonderful superfood, continue reading the review.

This special brand of amla has been introduced to diabetics to help control blood sugar levels. It consists of amla and green tea. Amla can benefit anyone’s health; it is also a powerful antioxidant. I have included some background info about how Amla Green was developed.

Amla Green is the brainchild of Cyrus Khambatta, Ph.D. Nutritional Biochemistry. After being diagnosed with type I diabetes at the tender age of 22, he began a lifelong pursuit seeking answers regarding his health when traditional dietary methods were not helping stop the deterioration of his health. He changed majors and enrolled in the doctorate program at UC Berkley.

He started studying the effects of insulin resistance in which he began searching for the perfect food for diabetics. Several years ago he came across some research on amla fruit. He learned that amla has played a major part in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. Amla is mentioned more than any other fruit in this ancient Indian natural medicine practice (5,000 years old). Amla has demonstrated incredibly effective abilities in reducing inflammation and helping reverse chronic disease.

Cyrus discovered that consuming small amounts of amla every day was more effective than statin medication that is used for heart disease… without those nasty side-effects. It also helps lower blood sugar and is the best food for lowering cholesterol. Amla also contains way more antioxidants than any other fruit on the planet.

Cyrus had one huge problem. Amla tastes awful. It is extremely bitter. He pondered, if amla is the most powerful cholesterol food in the world, then he needs to make it taste good so people will drink it. He began experimenting with formulations and consulting with many tea experts.

After many months, he created the world’s first Indian green tea which combines a super potent amla concentrate with 20x the power combined with oolong green tea.

Amla is also quite pricey to export to the United States, and the quality can often be suspect. Amla is often contaminated because of poor farming methods and a high variability from crop to crop. Amla Green only chooses the best organic amla money can buy and is processed with stringent manufacturing methods in the United States.

Amla Green™ is among the highest quality of amla products in the marketplace, and customers have been raving over the results. If you are interested in improving your health with one of the world’s most incredible antioxidants, try some today.

FAQs

How many milligrams of amla and green tea are in Amla Green?

There is 250 mg of concentrated amla powder which is equivalent to 5000 mg of unconcentrated amla. There is also 750 mg of dark green oolong tea in Amla Green.

What is different about oolong green tea?

Oolong tea is made from the same plant that gives us both green and black tea. When you oxidize green tea a little, you create oolong tea. If you oxidize the leaves longer, you create black tea. So oolong is somewhere between green and black tea. The oxidation process brings out certain properties in the tea. It creates a taste that goes well to counteract the bitterness of the amla. It also supports healthy blood sugars as well, which makes it a perfect partnership with amla.

How much caffeine is in amla green?

It has the caffeine equivalent of 1/4 cup of coffee.

Are the green tea leaves ground like matcha tea?

The tea is grounded down to a fine powder and will dissolve quickly dissolve in water.

How much does the scoop, included with Amla Green, hold in case it is lost?

It holds 1/4 of a teaspoon.

Conclusion

If you are serious about building or retaining a strong immune system, you should add Amla to your diet on a daily basis. I know most people don’t care enough to do something about their health. They want a quick fix. They will buy processed foods that use marketing to fool them into thinking they are doing something for their health. Not many will take time out of their day to prepare nutritious meals because they care about their health.

I talked to someone last night who was in the hospital for diabetic complications. It is getting real for her. I told her I am diabetic and have found a solution to help turn her health around. She remarked she didn’t have money to eat that way and that she has medication.SAD These medications just try to hold back the eventual deterioration of this disease.

I am proud that I am a fighter and will always seek a better way. Diabetes and heart disease was a wake-up call for me to live better. My heart is perfectly healthy now. My diabetes is now under control.

To your Health!

Many blessings, Brian
