Pink Himalayan Salt benefits you in many ways. Pure Himalayan salt is loaded with 84 minerals and trace elements. Over eons of time, salt in the Himalayan Mountains has developed a crystalline structure under tremendous amounts of pressure. The human body is easily able to absorb the minerals encased inside the crystallized salt. It is able to penetrate your cell wall so you benefit enormously from the salt.
Crystallized salt also provides you with electrolytes and improves communication with your cells. It also hydrates your cells. Table salt does the exact opposite. It dehydrates you and causes many imbalances throughout your body. For more details on the differences in salt follow this link.
Himalayan salt also helps normalize your blood pressure and restore your alkaline-acid balance. The latter is important during these dog days of wearing COVID masks which can have and acid-like effect in your blood.
You may also develop a healthier metabolism, and it may help cleanse your intestines and offer detoxification support.
Original Himalayan Crystal Salt, Product Review
Original Himalayan Crystal Salt is a division of Symphony Natural Health. They offer numerous salt products, but this review is focusing on their pure, high-quality Himalayan crystal salt. Their salt comes in fine, coarse, crystal rocks and bath salts. There are also many other items for sale containing Himalayan salt and items like crystal salt lamps (which are very popular).
How is the Salt Mined?
Let get right down to it. Where is the salt from? How is it mined? These are important if you really want to place the best salt on your table. If you are reading this, you want to know “What is so special about Pink salt?”
I had laid out the details in an earlier post. Click here to see it. The bottom line… table salt is destructive (altered by man)… Crystal salt fuels your body with nutrients. however, there are variations in quality. The tricky part is to find the source of crystal salt that has undergone enough pressure and has had time to develop into a nutritional source of minerals.
The Himalayan Mountains is a special place for salt mining. They are of course the highest mountains (entirely on land… Mauna Kea in Hawaii is the highest… starting deep underwater). Anyway… many, many years ago… what is now the Himalayan Mountains… was the bottom of the ocean. This is how salt got way up into the mountains. Tremendous pressure built these majestic mountains.
This is where you find the best know salt in the world. On the Pakistan side of the Himalayas. Salt runs in veins. To find the really potent salt, it is best to hand mind the salt. Thus, this drives up the price of the best salt.
Original Himalayan Crystal Salt is found in remote foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. It is hand-mined and transported by donkeys down a dirt road. It is cleaned, sorted by hand, and stone-ground with traditional methods to preserve the minerals.
Grocery store Pink salt comes from large mines. They use explosives to blast out the salt. This results in impurities contaminating the salt and it creates dangerous conditions for the workers. It is also a crapshoot finding the quality veins of salt this way. Your grocery store salt may have good salt mixed in with common crystallized rocks salt, which is in which the crystalline structure is not fully developed. (it is still healthier than table salt)
Established Relations with the Local Miners
The workers are treated fairly, never exploited, and paid a decent living wage. Joint partnerships have been set up with the local community. This has created an industry with wages 5 to 10 times higher than normal for their region. It is important for this company to benefit the people of this region and offer the best salt to the rest of the world.
What to look for when buying salt?
- the amount of trace mineral inside the crystals
- the ratio of minerals
- the structure and particle size of the minerals (important for proper cell absorption)
- how contaminated it is with pollution, additives or chemicals
- does it have research and the result of those tests

San Francisco Salt Company: Product Review
The San Francisco Salt Company is located in Alameda, California (in the Bay Area). They offer Sherpa Himalayan Salt as well as many flavored salts. They strive to bring unique flavors from around the world into people’s homes.
Their Salts are Imported
San Francisco Salt Company imports their gourmet food-grade Himalayan Salts straight from the source, the Kherwa Salt Mines. They are situated at the foothills of the Salt Range, about 160km south of Islamabad, Pakistan.
They also mention, when in its natural state, Himalayan Crystal salt is reported to have 84 different minerals. Their suppliers perform the standard TDS testing to ensure the minerals are presented. Below is a testing chart.
Himalayan Salt is 250 million years old. It has formed into its crystalline structure from immense pressure from the formation of the mountain chain. This created an environment for the purest salt in the world. Free from pollutants and contamination. There is no data provided to show how the salt is mined. They need to provide more data to prove if the salt was mined without corrupting the source of the salt. OSHA has inspected it, but doesn’t provide enough information.

Conclusion
Himalayan salt has a wonderful flavor and I love adding it to my food. I can’t stand table salt. I never have even considered myself a “salt person” until I discovered Himalayan salt. I actually crave it. Is this on account of the minerals?
I have purchased salt from the Original Himalayan Crystal Salt company. It is lighter in color than other Himalayan salts. I definitely want their larger crystal rocks for my morning sole. They are more expensive, but I like the meticulous care they undergo to provide the highest quality crystal salt. They have more detailed testing to validate the minerals present inside.
The San Francisco Salt Company offers a cheaper alternative for those not willing to shell out “big bucks for salt”. You will still pay more for regular sodium chloride (table salt)… which can be devastating to your health.
They mine their salt from the Pakistan mine known for bringing Himalayan salt to the world. They have undergone some standardized testing and back up their data. Himalayan salt of any quality is better than any other salt. Sea salt has been contaminated. So… if on a budget… at least get started with the San Francisco Salt company or if you want the highest quality, as far as data shows, go with the Original Himalayan Crystal Salt.

You are welcome
Hi Brian, great article!
I have heard that there is a lot of fake Himalayan salt sold in stores. How can I tell which product is authentic?
I really appreciated this article, thank you for sharing.
Yes Catherine, there seems to be a lot of fake rock salt pushed as Himalayan salt. Marketers are always on the lookout for making a quick dollar. At least those with little integrity or just don’t do their due diligence and investigate their source. I actually emailed the San Francisco Salt company because I could not find testing results on their website. They emailed me a copy of their testing results and I put it on my post.
When in doubt contact a supplier to see if they can back up their claims. Honest companies will take pride and open up a line of communication with you. If they do not… they are probably shady. Thanks for reading.
